Varceis Club donates to Ram Readers

A group of Scranton Varceis members participated in the October Ram Readers program, formerly the national Reading is Fundamental program at the Greene County Elementary School in Jefferson. Ram Readers is a special program designed to encourage reading for pleasure. It supports distributions of free books four times throughout the year, where students have the opportunity to select books matching their interests.

Funds are provided by volunteers, companies, and community organizations who are named on a sticker affixed to the inside front cover of each book. The Scranton Varceis Club has donated to the Ram Readers for many years.

The Varceis ladies were surprised how quickly children from grades Kindergarten through fourth filed in and promptly found the book they were longing for. One fourth grader said, “Yes, now I have the whole set!” Another one was searching for “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” And yet another was too late to find the book he wanted, although there were many other choices to be made. It was interesting watching and being part of the excitement the children had in finding the books of their choosing.

Varceis Club members at the Ram Reader book distribution are (from left) Cheryl Robson, Elaine Schermerhorn, Linda Hedges, Roberta Henning, and Susanne MacDonald.

The Varceis women are delighted to be a part of preparing children for success in the future. Persons or organizations that would like to donate to the future of successful young Greene County readers may send money to: Greene County Elementary, c/o Ram Readers, 401 E. Russell St, Jefferson.
