Report on Hardin Creek fish kill still not complete

Iowa DNR staff is still working on a report of the fish kill in Hardin Creek in August.
Jake Theis, environmental specialist at the Atlantic DNR office, said he hopes the report will be complete by early next week, although he admitted he’s said that for the past two weeks. “Sometimes these things take longer. We need it to be correct,” he said.

An extensive fish kill in Hardin Creek that started at the bridge on Highway 4 a mile north of Jefferson and ended at 255th St in Grant Township was first reported by USDA staff taking water samples on Aug. 21.

DNR staff responded the next day. Theis reported finding many species of dead fish. Dan Towers, Greene County conservationist, said dead fish ranged in size from minnows to 30-pound flatheads.
