Greene County district court, week ending July 11

In Greene County district court Tyler James Smits, 26, of Jefferson was sentenced July 11 to one year in prison after pleading guilty to a charge of harassment- second degree, amended from harassment- first degree. The prison time is concurrent to sentenced in two other Greene County cases. The prison time was suspended and Smits was placed on probation for one year. He must complete a batterers education program during that time. Smits was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge.

He was also sentenced to seven days in jail on a charge in magistrate court of violation of a no contact order. He was given credit for time served and released. That term was also concurrent to other Greene County charges. He was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge in that case. A second charge of violation of a no contact order was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Court costs were $207.50. (Sentencing: Honorable Thomas L. Bice)

Christine Kay Moran, 47, of Perry pleaded not guilty at arraignment to a charge of gambling- false jackpot claim. A trial date was set for Aug. 27.

Cases were initiated in district court as follows: Ignacio Melendez Leiva, 41, of Perry, operating while intoxicated- first offense; Tyler John Tassell, 40, of Carroll, OWI- first offense; Malissa Lou Brooks, 41, of Jefferson, criminal mischief- fourth degree; and James Leon Cunningham, 44, of Jefferson, assault on person in certain occupation and possession of methamphetamine- second offense.
