July Yard of the Month honors to Shirley Stapleton

An ever-changing array of colorful blooms flow through the gardens of Shirley Stapleton at 500 Edgewood Avenue, selected as the July 2019 Jefferson Garden Club Yard of the Month.

Abundant sunlight on the south side of her home creates a perfect environment for lilac, hibiscus, and many varieties of lilies. A newly created garden closer to the street is centered by a hydrangea tree, a large white lily and features drifts of rich purple blue salvia, yarrow and the giant zinnia will soon be in bloom. Whimsical garden ornaments are interspersed throughout her gardens.

Along the front sidewalk she has used large, matching blue pots filled with a variety of colorful, sun-loving annuals as a cheery welcome to her home.

On the west side of her property Shirley has planted a hydrangea hedge that is becoming established near the street. Farther back is a large shaded area which is home for many hosta specimens Shirley has gathered from various sources. Nearby is a river rock “creek” which helps manage rainfall and carry it away from the driveway and lawn.

Shirley’s daily garden care is such a priority for her that she is planning any vacations around needed attention to her flower beds and the lawn care which she also manages.
