Jefferson man dies after one-vehicle crash on Eureka bridge

A Jefferson man died of injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident on Eureka bridge west of Jefferson late Saturday night.

According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, Ronald Kolbeck, 60, of Jefferson was eastbound on County Road E-53 west of Kirkwood Ave when he sideswiped the bridge. He continued in contact with the bridge for several feet. His 2012 Ford F250 pickup truck came to rest on the south side of the bridge against the railing.

Kolbeck was not wearing a seatbelt and his airbag did not deploy.

Kolbeck was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Ambulance and later transferred to another facility by ground ambulance. He died as a result of his injuries.

The report notes the roadway was dark and wet.

Damage to his pickup truck was estimated at $10,000. Damage to the bridge railing was estimated at $2,000.
