Sheriff’s report – June 2019


Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Sunday, June 30: At 4:17 am a deputy investigated a burglary complaint in Grand Junction. At 8:44 am a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in Grand Junction. At 9:30 am a deputy investigated a theft complaint in Scranton. At 4:15 pm a deputy investigated a possible accident in the 600 block of South 15th St in Grand Junction. There was no damage to either vehicle. At 5:43 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in Grand Junction. At 7:31 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse-assault complaint in Grand Junction. At 10:40 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in Rippey.

Saturday, June 29: At 8:49 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Churdan. At 4:43 pm a deputy located a cement blow up on R Ave near 110th St in Dawson Township. At 5:14 pm a deputy located a cement blow up on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 260th St in Greenbrier Township. At 7:31 pm a deputy investigated fireworks complaint in Grand Junction. At 9:54 pm a deputy investigated a fireworks complaint in Churdan. At 10:25 pm a deputy investigated fireworks complaint in Grand Junction.

Friday, June 28: At 7:32 am a deputy located a German shepherd running at large on Highway 144 near 210th St north of Grand Junction. The dog was taken to PAWS.

Thursday, June 27: At 1:46 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in Grand Junction. At  2:10 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton. At 5:06 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Brett Ford, 43,of Glidden swerved to avoid a piece of metal in the roadway, but he struck the guard rail. Damage to his 2017 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was estimated at $3,000.

Wednesday, June 26: At 12:41 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a  call of domestic abuse assault. At 2:59 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a call of an assault. At 9:24 am a deputy investigated a theft of a trailer in Rippey. The trailer was located in the 1600 block of T Ave in Junction Township. At 12:19 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in Rippey. At 2:52 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in Scranton.

Tuesday, June 25: Routine activity reported.

Monday, June 24: At 10:43 am a deputy had a vehicle towed that was on the railroad right of away on 16th St in Grand Junction. At 2:44 pm a deputy assisted with locating an owner of livestock that were out in the 1300 block of R Ave in Grant Township. At 3:52 pm a deputy called the Rippey fire department to put out a small fire that was unattended near Rippey. At 8:55 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of kids ringing doorbells in Scranton.

Sunday, June 23: At 2:12 am while the Jefferson police department, the sheriff and deputies, and the Iowa State Patrol were on-scene after a fatal accident on County Road E-53 west of Jefferson, Bryce Murano, 20, of Woodward nearly struck fire personnel and a fire truck that was blocking the roadway for the safety of law enforcement personnel. Murano was  told to stop but sped north on Kirkwood Ave. His 2006 Jeep Wrangler entered the northeast ditch and 230th St and Kirkwood Ave, striking a utility pole guide wire. The JPD was asked to assist. Murano stated he was leaving the Flack River Farm. He was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of alcohol under age*. Breanne Parkins, 20, of West Des Moines was a passenger. She was arrested for possession of alcohol underage. At 6:50 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint on Highway 25 and 182nd St in Kendrick Township. At 10:11 am a deputy investigated criminal mischief at the Rippey ball field. At 12:20 pm a complainant reported his cellular phone was stolen while he was at Flack River Farm. At 1:22 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton

Saturday, June 22: At 5:02 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-53 (240th) St near H Ave in Jackson Township. Edward Goff, 17, of Jefferson lost control of a 2005 Ford Taurus and entered the ditch, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage to the vehicle. At 8:32 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 4 (140th St) near J Ave east of Churdan. Patricia Sims, 78, of Churdan struck a deer with a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,500.  At 9 pm deputies investigated a complaint of underage drinking at Flack River Farms. At 9:14 pm deputies received  complaints of young people running down Highway 30 in swimsuits next to the river bridge east of J Ave. The bridge is one-half mile from Flack River Farms. The deputies received the complaint while they were at Flack River Farm. At 9:20 pm deputies received another complaint of people on Highway 30 in swimsuits getting into vehicles and running down the highway near G Ave. At 9:35 pm a deputy investigated a possible drunk driver on Highway 30 headed towards Jefferson. The vehicle was located at Cobblestone Inn. At 10:50 pm Ashley McManus, 36, of Ottumwa was booked into the jail for operating while intoxicated*. McManus said she was leaving Flack River Farms. At 11:34 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-57 (290th) St. Eva Gerst, 19, of Urbandale lost control of a 2003 Lexus ES 300 and entered the south ditch. Damage to the vehicle was minor. At  11:57 pm the sheriff, deputies, Jefferson fire department, Greene County Ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol responded to a single vehicle fatal accident on County Road E-53 just east of Kirkwood Ave. Ronald Kolbeck, 60, of Jefferson lost control of his 2012 Ford F-250 pickup truck and struck the river bridge several times. Kolbeck was observed by a deputy at Flack River Farms. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident. 

Friday, June 21: At 8:20 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Thursday, June 20: At 1:05 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 500 block of North 16th St in Grand Junction. At 8:35 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton. At 11:38 am Justin Harvey, 18, of Grand Junction was booked into the jail for criminal mischief- 4th degree (four counts) and criminal mischief- 5th degree (two counts)*. At 4:40 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 4 near Highway 30 near Jefferson and arrested Kole Higgins, 24, of Scranton for driving while barred*.  At 4:41 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident at 11th and Hager Sts in Grand Junction. Colby Lappe, 24, of Auburn was northbound on 11th St driving a 2004 Ford Expedition. Aaron Vandoorn, 42, of Perry was eastbound on Hager St (vehicle information not provided). Vandoorn failed to stop as posted and struck Lappe’s vehicle, causing an estimated $2,500 in damage Vandoorn was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $4,000. At 11;36 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 700 block of H Ave in Hardin Township.

Wednesday, June 19: At 7:04 am a deputy investigated a report of a suspicious person that was seen in the 900 block of High St in Scranton at about 4:30 am and not reported till 2-1/2 hours later. At 7:19 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 7:33 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 400 block of State St in Scranton. At 7:54 am a deputy investigated another burglary in the 400 block of State St in Scranton. At 10:21 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 900 block of High St in Scranton. At 11:06 am the sheriff investigated a suspicious person in the 1700 block of 222nd St in Grant Township. Jim Tancredi, 41, of Texas was arrested for stowing away on a train*. At 11:58 am the sheriff investigated a suspected burglary in the 1700 block of 222nd St. At 1:29 pm a deputy investigated an assault that occurred in Churdan. At 2:51 pm a deputy investigated a backing accident at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. Judith Warburton, 78, of Altoona backed her 2018 Chevrolet Equinox into an unoccupied 2017 Ford Escape. Damage to both vehicle was estimated at $2,000. At 5:56 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 500 block of Jefferson St in Scranton.

Tuesday, June 18: At 1:07 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Eaton Ave east of Scranton. Paul Oyers, 37, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2004 GMC Sierra, causing an estimated $500 in damage to the vehicle. At 5:46 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 1200 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief to a stop sign in Rippey. At 11:48 am a deputy investigated a forgery in Scranton. At 6:14 pm John Roberts, 20, of Grand Junction was booked into the county jail after being arrested for criminal mischief- fourth degree (four counts) and criminal mischief- fifth degree (two counts)*.

Monday, June 17: At 12:25 pm a deputy investigated a PayPal scam in Rippey. At 12:53 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog running at large  in Scranton. At 8:08 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of orange bags along the roadway on Highway 30.

Sunday, June 16: At 9:57 am a deputy assisted with cattle out on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 120th St in Cedar Township. At 11:08 am a deputy assisted with two dogs that were found on 305th St. The dogs were taken to the animal holding facility. At 1:46 pm a deputy assisted with removing a bale of hay from the roadway on Highway 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson.

Saturday, June 15: At 5:18 am a deputy responded to a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Tracy Rummans, 56, of Perry struck a deer with her 2011 Chevrolet Equinox, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage to the vehicle. At 12:41 pm a deputy assisted with a dog that was picked up near Grand Junction. The boxer was taken to the animal holding facility. At 10:37 pm a deputy responded to a car-deer accident in the 600 block of County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Dawson Township. Jacob Thompson, 19, of Churdan struck a deer with a 2009 Dodge Challenger, causing an estimated $4,000 in damage to the vehicle.

Thursday, June 13: At 8:42 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint to a mailbox in the 2000 block of 285th St in Washington Township. At 10:34 am the sheriff located a missing semi and trailer on Sand St in Churdan. The owners had it towed to Carroll. At 11:44 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint to a mailbox in the 1900 block of T Ave in Washington Township. At 1:35 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint to a mailbox in the 2000 block of 280th St in Washington Township. Arrest warrants have been requested for the two individuals suspected of being involved with damaging the mailboxes. At 2:51 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on U Ave just south of Rippey. At 6:01 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted Boone County personnel with a vehicle pursuit that entered Greene County and then returned to Boone County. At 9:54 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, June 12: At 6:46 pm a deputy investigated several mailboxes being hit by a blue car along the 2000 block of 280th St, 250th St, and T Ave. At 7:11 pm a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint in Grand Junction involving the same blue car. At 7:19 pm a deputy investigated the violation of a no contact order in Scranton. At 8:13 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2000 block of 280th St in Washington Township.

Tuesday, June 11: At 4:51 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. At 12:06 pm the sheriff attempted to locate two dogs running at large on 230th St near U Ave in Junction Township. At 6:10 pm a deputy located in Churdan a vehicle that was stolen out of Ames. At 7:15 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in Grand Junction.

Monday, June 10: At 1:41 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of Head St in Churdan. At 4:27 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 9: At 3:07 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction. At 4:25 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest near Home State Bank. At 10:30 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in Grand Junction.

Saturday, June 8: At 3:08 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in progress in the 1400 block of 100th St in Paton Township. A juvenile was taken in custody. At 9:05 am a deputy investigated a Facebook scam in Scranton. At 3:24 pm a deputy investigated a backing accident at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. Mirna Duque, 32, of California backed her 2005 Dodge Durango into a parked 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. Damaged to the parked vehicle was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Duque’s vehicle was estimated at $200. Duque was cited for failure to have a valid driver’s license and failure to provide proof of financial liability coverage- accident related.

Friday, June 7: At 10:20 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Grand Junction. At 3:56 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 at Hillcrest Ave. At 6:27 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 7:04 pm a deputy was called to Mount Calvary Cemetery in Grand Junction for a sick owl. At 7:08 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on 175th St near C Ave in Cedar Township. Amy Gray, 53, of Glidden lost control of her 2005 Toyota Prius and entered the ditch. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,500.

Wednesday, June 5: At 12:02 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on V Ave near 320th St in Washington Township. Jeffrey Ewing, 68, of St Charles struck a deer with his 2000 GMC Sierra K2500 pickup truck. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $300. At 7:42 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of child neglect in Scranton. At 11:19 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, May 4: At 5:14 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident at County Road P-14 (J Ave) and Highway 30. Jon Tiffany, 66, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2010 Ford Ranger, causing an estimated $800 damage to the vehicle. At 4:06 pm a deputy investigated a theft complaint that was found to of occurred in Rockwell City. At 7:39 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with locating the parents of a juvenile in Paton.

Monday, June 3: At 6:32 am a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment  in Scranton. At 9:28 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 2: At 10:24 am a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on 110th St and T Ave in Dawson Township. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Webster County. There was no driver in the area. At 8:23 pm a deputy investigated a fight in Grand Junction.

Saturday, June 1: At 12:25 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle in the 1600 block of Highway 30 east of Jefferson. At 12:30 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 near S Ave west of Grand Junction. At 10:14 am a deputy investigated items on the side of the roadway on V Ave near 290th St in Washington Township. The items were drug paraphernalia. At 5:00 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1700 block of F Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 5:50 pm a deputy assisted DHS with an investigation in Scranton. At 11:28 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in Scranton.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
