Rams qualify 13 events for Co-ed State Track & Field Meet

The Greene County boys track and field team is culminating a successful season by earning the Class 2A District 5 title and qualifying nine events for the Co-ed State Track and Field Meet May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Junior Carter Morton qualified in three individual events and one relay.

The district qualifying meet was held Friday at Panorama High School in Panora. First and second place finishers at the district meet qualified for the state meet, with remaining positions in the state meet going to the holders of the eight best times or distances across the state.

Morton, son of coach Chad Morton won the high jump, clearing the bar at 6’ 8”. He also placed first in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.39 seconds and the 400m hurdles with a time of 57.51 seconds.

Junior Tyler Miller placed first in the shot put with a throw of 52’ 3”, and first in the discus with a throw of 146’ 2”. Junior Colby Kafer won the long jump at 22’ 1”; he qualified in the 200m as an at-large finisher with a time of 23.39 seconds. He was the fifth place finisher in District 5, with .44 seconds separating the first and fifth finishers.

The 4 X 100m relay team of Tyler Teeples, Morton, Brent Riley and Kafer qualified with a second place finish and a time of 44.64 seconds, just .22 seconds slower than the first place team.

Teeples qualified at-large with a time of 11.54 seconds in the 100m dash. He was the fourth place finisher at the district meet.

Team scores for boys teams were Greene County 115, Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center 98, Mount Ayr 96, Van Meter 75, Southeast Valley 74, West Central Valley 66, Shenandoah 42, Red Oak 40, I-35 Truro 40, Clarinda 38,Ogden 32, Panorama 25.
The girls team qualified four events for the state meet. Sophomore Brianna Osterson qualified with a second place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 3”.

The 4 X 100m relay team of Maddy Sigler, Melanie Doran, Makala Kafer and Osterson finished second with a time of 52.48 seconds, and the same team placed second in the 4 X 200m relay with a time of 1:54.04. The 800m sprint medley relay team of Paige Heaning, Sigler, Kafer and Osterson finished second in a time of 1:56.21.

Panorama is district champion for the girls with a score of 175. Other sores were Van Meter 86, ACGC 82.5, Southeast Valley 73, Shenandoah 66.5, Greene County 53, 1-35 Truro 48, Mount Ayr 38.5, Clarinda 36, Red Oak 33, Ogden 30, and West Central Valley 16.5.
