Ram soccer team splits games to start week

The Ram boys soccer team split Monday-Tuesday games to put their season record at 7-2.

The team started the week Monday with a 6-0 win over the PCM Mustangs in Grand Junction. Coach Carl Behne called it “a great bounce back win and much needed” after the team took its first loss for the season against Gilbert last week.

Junior Gutierrez scored three goals, Luis Valazco and Austin Delp scored one each, and PCM added an OG (own goal – a player causing the ball to go into his or her own team’s goal). Goal keeper Cael Fisher had eight saves to keep the Mustangs scoreless.

The team lost 1-2 at North Polk Tuesday on a cold, windy ad rainy night.

Behne reported Junior Gutierrez scored the Rams’ only goal. He said the Rams had three very close chances late in the game, and that the difference was again a penalty for a handball in the box that allowed the Comets to score on a penalty kick.

Behne said he was proud of the team’s effort as the boys pushed until the final second despite the weather. “It was a learning opportunity for us and a chance to clean up before it matters,” he said.

The Rams are off the rest of the week before heading to a three-match tournament at Nevada Saturday.
