Rolland Hillman, 1931 – 2019

A Service of Remembrance was held April 27 for Rolland Eugene Hillman, 87, of Grand Junction.

Pastor Steve Ransom offered words of comfort. Becci Prather and Christina Hackman shared family remembrances. Jennifer Hillman, Becci Prather, Stephanie Hillman and Christina Hackman sang a quartet and Jennifer was soloist. They were accompanied by Danille Curtis. Honorary bearers were Jason Prather, Lars Lindberg, Bob Glenn and Romayne Dudley.

Casket bearers were Michael Rains, Jason Rains, Garrett Nelson, Beau Nelson, Darin Hackman and Jeff Frantz. Interment was at the Junction Township Cemetery.

The family was assisted by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home.

Rolland Eugene Hillman was born June 6, 1931, in Grand Junction to Payson and Bernice Hillman. In February of 1950, Rolland married Doris Vanhorn. They were the parents of four children: Renee, Steve, David and Pam.

Rolland worked as a meat cutter all his life, starting in Grand Junction, then Jefferson, and finally 37 years at the Boone Fareway grocery store. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for 75 years, and was active in Methodist Men. Rolland was scout master for Troop 37 for many years, receiving Scouting’s Silver Beaver Award. He also loved golfing, skiing, gardening, wood working, toll painting, and traveling. He loved his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and attended most school activities, events, and birthday parties.

Rolland passed away April 22, 2019, in Jefferson at the age of 87 years, 10 months, and 16 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Doris who died September 16, 2004; his son David, who died July 9, 1992; his sister Norma Scaglione; and his son-in-law Jerry Rains.

Surviving are Rolland’s three children: Renee Rains of Kansas City, MO, Steve Hillman of Grand Junction, and Pam Hillman of Des Moines; his Swedish son, AFS student Lars Lindberg; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Michelle Hillman of Des Moines; and other relatives and friends.
