Sheriff’s report – March 2019

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Sunday, March 31: At 1:16 pm a deputy and the Scranton fire department responded to a controlled burn that was out of control in the 700 block of County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Kendrick Township. At 5:21 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a controlled burn that was out of control in the 1800 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Saturday, March 30: At 11:30 am the sheriff located a washout on the roadway on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 19th St in Kendrick Township.

Friday, March 29: At 2:49 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a burglary and the arrest of Roderick Klampe II, 27, of Carroll. At 6:05 pm a deputy arrested McKinsie Bess, 36, of Carroll for an arrest warrant for failure to appear.

Friday, March 29: At 2:49 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a burglary and the arrest of Roderick Klampe II, 27, of Carroll.

Thursday, March 28: At 1:25 pm a deputy investigated a barking dog complaint in Paton. At 8:41 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a theft in the 200 block of E. Lincoln Way.Wednesday, March 27: At 7:12 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint at Casey’s General Store in Scranton. Christopher Lehrkamp, 32, homeless, was arrested on a Jasper County warrant for failure to appear.

Tuesday, March 26: At 12:58 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction. Tracey Smith, 54, of Dallas Center was arrested for assault causing bodily injury or mental illness*. Benjamin Cahall, 39, of Grand Junction was arrested for assault- simple*.

Monday, March 25: At 4:14 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 500 block of S. 8th St in Grand Junction. At 12:26 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Grand Junction. At 11 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction.

Sunday, March 24: At 4:19 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an assault in the 200 block of N. Oak St in Jefferson.

Saturday, March 23: At 12:06 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident in the 700 block of Highway 30 east of Scranton. Denyese Blunk, 48, of Boone was driving her 2014 Toyota Rav4 and struck a deer, causing an estimated $5,000 damage to the vehicle. At 9:17 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction. At 1:15 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault in Jefferson. At 5:55 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton. At 6:43 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on S Ave near County Road E-53 in Grant Township. At 7:56 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction.

Friday, March 22: At 9 am the sheriff investigated a complaint of oversized loads being taken down several gravel roads. An estimated 180,000-pound crane was located and did not have the proper permits to be operating on the gravel roads. An Iowa DOT officer was called and issued citations. At 9:41 am the sheriff assisted the Jefferson PD with a medical call in the 1000 block of W. Wall St in Jefferson. At 2:59 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in Grand Junction. At 4:10 pm a deputy investigated an assault at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction.

Thursday, March 21: At 12:53 am a deputy investigated a hit-and-run accident in the 900 block of Irving St in Scranton. A vehicle had struck two vehicles that were legally parked. The first vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Altima, sustained an estimated $4,500 in damage. The second vehicle, a 2013 Chevy Impala, sustained an estimated $2,500 in damage. At 1:31 am a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle parked and stuck in a snow drift in the 1300 block of County Road E-33 (190th St) in Hardin Township. Bruce Greer, 36, of Scranton was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence- second offense*. At 7:28 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an investigation of counterfeit $100 bill.

Wednesday, March 20: At 2:35 pm a deputy arrested Hayley Brown, 26, of Jefferson on a probation violation arrest warrant. At 4:24 pm a deputy investigated an assault on a jailer by Hayley Brown. During an inventory of Brown’s property suspected marijuana was found. Arrest warrants were issued for possession of a controlled substance- second offense, assault on persons in a certain occupation, and possession of contraband in an institution*.

Tuesday, March 19: Routine activity reported.

Monday, March 18: At 2:43 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and Eaton Ave east of Scranton. Larry Pudenz, 54, of Auburn was westbound driving 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck. Charles Wright, 77, of Scranton was southbound on Eaton Ave driving a 2007 Ford Ranger pickup truck. Wright pulled out in front of Pudenz and their vehicles collided. There were no injuries in the accident. Wright was cited for failure to yield from a stop sign. Damage to Pudenz’ vehicle was estimated at $3,500. Damage to Wright’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000. At 5:35 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Scranton. At 8:25 pm a deputy arrested Robert Thoma, 20, of Scranton for failure to serve a sentence.

Sunday, March 17: At 3:54 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in Scranton.

Saturday, March 16: At 1:32 am a deputy investigated a theft in Churdan. At 1:43 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1800 block of 150th St in Dawson Township. At 6:20 pm a deputy assisted an Iowa State Patrolman with the arrest of Taylor King, 26, of Churdan for possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence*. At 8:02 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive-off at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction.

Friday, March 15: At 6:48 am a deputy investigated a report of a picnic table in the roadway near County Road E-33 (190th St) and Highway 4 in Hardin Township. It was found to be a road closed sign that had fallen over. At 10:43 am a deputy assisted U.S. marshals with the arrest of John Minnehan, 63, of Churdan for federal arrest warrants. At 3:37 pm a deputy assisted the Webster County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a runaway.

Thursday, March 14: At 3:54 am a deputy investigated an identity theft complaint in Scranton. At 10:23 am the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 25 near 250th St south of Scranton. Bobbie Kelly, 40, of West Des Moines hit water with her 2016 Mazda 6 and hydroplaned into the west ditch. The vehicle was a total loss. At 2:01 pm a deputy and a DNR officer collected an injured eagle on Highway 144 near Paton. The eagle was taken to Carroll to a rehab center for birds. At 2:40 pm the sheriff arrested Whitney Campbell-Perez, 21, of Coon Rapids on an arrest warrant for harassment- second degree*.

Wednesday, March 13: At 5:19 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in Scranton. At 11:10 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle in the ditch full of water on Highway 25 near 300th St in Willow Township. There was no driver present and the vehicle was towed from the ditch.

Tuesday, March 12: At 10:01 am a deputy assisted Jefferson PD in the 400 block of S. Georgia St.

Monday, March 11: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, March 10: At 10:52 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 25 near 280th St south of Scranton. Clayton Vest, 28, of Carroll lost control of his 2001 Ford F-150 pickup truck and rolled it into the ditch. There were no injuries. Damage to the truck was estimated at $5,000. There was an estimated 5,000 dollars damage to the vehicle. There were no injuries. At 5:03 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Churdan. At 11:16 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a check for a wanted person at Sparky’s One Stop in Jefferson.

Saturday, March 9: At 10:53 am a deputy tried to locate a raccoon in the garage of a residence in the 200 block of Pearl St in Farlin. At 11:36 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 300 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction. At 2:50 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover on County Road P-46 (X Ave) near 110th St in Paton Township. Amanda Sodag, 23, of Paton lost control of her 1999 Ford Explorer and entered the ditch. Sodag sustained minor injuries. The vehicle was a total loss.

Friday, March 8: At 7:05 am the sheriff, deputies, Churdan and Jefferson fire departments and Greene County Ambulance responded to an electrical fire in the 600 block of Harding St in Churdan. Only an outlet was damaged. At 2:13 pm a deputy arrested Allen Smith, 52, of Grand Junction on arrest warrants for theft- second degree and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon*. At 2:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fraudulent use of a credit card in Grand Junction. At 10 pm a deputy arrested Benjamin Cahill, 37, of Grand Junction on a Boone County arrest warrant.

Thursday, March 7: At 5:33 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 and Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. At 9:19 am the sheriff and a deputy investigated a semi tractor-trailer in the ditch on Highway 30 and S Ave west of Grand Junction. The driver had choked on a beverage and entered the north ditch. The rig was not damaged. At 4:38 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in the 1700 block of Highway 25 south of Scranton.

Wednesday, March 6: At 5:34 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. Andrew Wiskus, 30, of Jefferson struck a deer with his Mitsubishi EDV, causing an estimated $1,500 damage to the vehicle. At 2:26 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of 18th St North in Grand Junction. At 2:30 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of 15th St South in Grand Junction. At 7:23 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave. Gabriel Jensen, 20, of Churdan struck a deer with his 2009 Pontiac G6, causing an estimated $2,000 damage to the vehicle. At 10:11 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near C Ave west of Scranton.

Tuesday, March 5: At 7:47 am a deputy investigated a backing accident in the 400 block of State St in Scranton. Robert Bettey, 49, of Scranton was backing his 2016 Chevy Silverado pickup truck from his driveway and struck a 2017 Ford Explorer pickup truck driven by Melissa Means, 48, of Bagley. Both vehicles had an estimated $1,500 in damage. There were no injuries and no citations issued. At 9:19 am a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction. At 12 pm a deputy investigated a power line down on at County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 340th St in Greenbrier Township. At 2:47 pm a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 185th St in Hardin Township. Dillon Brandt, 30, of Atlantic lost control of his 2003 GMC Yukon on a patch of ice and lost control. His vehicle entered the west ditch. Damage was estimated at less than $1,000. At 3:58 pm the sheriff and a deputy investigated a single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 30 near M Ave west of Jefferson. Arthur Irlbeck, 75, of Dedham lost control of his 1999 Ford F250 pickup truck on a patch of ice. He was not injured but his vehicle was a total loss. The Jefferson PD assisted. At 5:42 pm the sheriff, a deputy and the Iowa State Patrol assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle personal injury accident on Highway 30 near Grimmell Rd. At 6:39 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 1600 block of L Ave in Jackson Township.

Monday, March 4: At 4:04 pm a deputy investigated an animal bite in the 1500 block of 235th St in Grant Township.

Sunday, March 3: At 2:07 pm a deputy assisted the Perry PD with trying to locate a subject in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 6:53 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant in the 300 block of E. State St in Jefferson. At 8:15 am a deputy investigated a 911 hang up on 18th St in Grand Junction

Saturday, March 2: At 4:39 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 1:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of snowmobiles being operated in the Scranton city park. At 4:49 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Friday, March 1: At 9:32 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:40 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in the 300 block of East Main Street, Grand Junction. At 6:16 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of Y Ave in Junction Township. At 7:35 pm deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with a standoff in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
