Sheriff’s report – February

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, Feb. 28: At 6:43 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction. At 10:04 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 600 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 27: At 3:10 pm  a deputy arrested Douglas Owen, 36, of  Churdan for driving while license barred*. At 6:46 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on 280th St near V Ave in Washington Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 26: At 5:01 am a deputy investigated a jackknifed semi tractor-trailer blocking the roadway on Highway at 250th St south of Scranton. At 11:45 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint  in Scranton. At 3:53 pm the sheriff, a deputy, Jefferson PD, and Jefferson fire responded to a vehicle fire at Henderson Park near the Raccoon River bridge south of Jefferson. The vehicle was a total loss. The owner has not been identified yet. The driver was taken to the Greene County Medical Center for unrelated medical issues by a deputy.

Monday, Feb. 25: From 6 am through 5 pm the sheriff and deputies towed another estimated 40 cars out of the ditch and assisted with traffic control for owners who arranged their own tow. An estimated total of more than 100 cars were found in the ditch or stuck on the roadway throughout Greene County.

Sunday, Feb. 24: From midnight through 8 am the sheriff and four deputies conducted about 40 rescues around the county. From 8 through 10 am the sheriff, four deputies, and secondary roads conducted four more rescues. In all, 90 persons were rescued and brought back to Jefferson. Two of the rescues were vehicle roll overs with no injuries. From 10 am through the remainder of the daylight the sheriff and deputies towed an estimated 40 cars out of the ditches and roadways.

Saturday, Feb. 23: Between 12:27 am and 4:07 pm deputies assisted nine motorists. At 7:2 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. a deputy assisted a motorist that was stuck on the ice on 235th Street near J Avenue. From 7 pm through midnight the sheriff, Jefferson fire department and four deputies conducted about 30 rescues of persons from vehicles in the ditch. The secondary roads department and the Iowa DOT assisted.

Friday, Feb. 22: At 7:51 am the sheriff, deputies, Carroll County sheriff’s office, Scranton fire, and Greene County EMS responded to a reported shooting in the 3300 block of 165th St in Carroll County. The call was found to be false. At 8:54 am a deputy investigated credit card fraud in the 200 block of S. Main St in Paton. At 12:10 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 1000 block of Highway 4 north of Jefferson. At 3:03 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 at Highway 4 in Jefferson. At 7:10 pm a deputy investigated a child neglect complaint in Scranton. At 11:01 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Churdan. At 11:26 pm a deputy investigated two vehicles in the ditch in the 400 block of County Road P-29 (N Ave) in Dawson Township. Both drivers lost control on the icy roads.

Thursday, Feb. 21: At 11:03 am the sheriff, a deputy, and Jefferson firefighters responded to log skidder that was on fire in the 1800 block of Redwood Ave in Franklin Township. The fire started in the dash of the vehicle and was determined to be a electrical fire. The piece of equipment was a total loss.

Wednesday, Feb. 20: At 4:34 am a deputy was requested by the city of Scranton to write snow ordinance violations. Two citations were issued. At 2:04 pm a deputy investigated an accident on County Road E-57 (290th St) at County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Greenbrier Township. Scott Weaver, 44, of Jefferson was driving a 1981 John Deere 4430 tractor with a bale spear mounted on the front. Weaver attempted to make a U turn in the intersection. He didn’t see a 2008 Ford F250 pickup truck driven by Christopher Brown, 34, of Cooper. Weaver caught the passenger side of the pickup truck with the bale spear, causing an estimated $5,000 in damage. Damage to Weaver’s tractor was estimated at $1,000. There were no injuries and no citations were issued.

Tuesday, Feb. 19: At 4:43 pm a deputy investigated a theft of a snowmobile in the 600 block of County Road P-33 (S Ave) in Dawson Township. At 10:35 pm a deputy and the county K-9 assisted with tracking a male subject in the 500 block of S. Olive St. The male subject was located.

Monday, Feb. 18: At 5:30 pm a deputy investigated a snowmobile complaint in Scranton. At 8:31 pm a deputy arrested Shane Jewett, 43, of Paton on an arrest warrant.

Sunday, Feb. 17: At 4:45 am the sheriff, a deputy, fire departments from Paton, Grand Junction and Jefferson, and Greene County EMS responded to a structure fire at 513 T Ave in Dawson Township. The mobile home was a complete loss. The fire is under investigation. At 7:43 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Wild Rose Casino. At 8:56 pm a deputy assisted the Perry PD with locating a subject in Washington Township.

Saturday, Feb. 16: At 6:02 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite at McMahon Access on I Ave in Jackson Township.

Friday, Feb. 15: At 5:06 am the sheriff, deputies, fire departments from Scranton and Jefferson and Greene County EMS responded to a fire at a hog confinement building in the 1900 block of I Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 9:08 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 1500 block of Highway 144 in Junction Township. At 9:11 am a deputy located an owner of dog that was found running at large. At 11 am the sheriff assisted with a unruly inmate. At 1:03 pm the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 270th St south of Jefferson. Robert Schroeder, 51, of Scranton lost control of his 2005 Jeep Wrangler and went into the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 3:16 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on County Road N-58 (A Ave) and County Road E-63 (330th St) in Willow Township. Orrin Phelps, 59, was driving a 1989 Peterbuilt semi tractor-trailer and was stopped. Dylan Robson, 26, was driving a 2019 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer and rear ended Phelps’ trailer, causing an estimated $500 in damage to the trailer and an estimated $2,000 in damage to his own semi tractor. Robson was cited for failure to stop in the assured clear distance. At 4:10 pm a deputy investigated a minor accident on Highway 30 and Eaton Ave east of Scranton. Colton Davis, 17, of Jefferson was eastbound when a tire from another vehicle came off and hit his mirror. The accident was not reportable.

Thursday, Feb. 14: At 12:19 pm a deputy assisted with a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 30 at T Ave west of Grand Junction. At 2:30 pm deputies assisted with a semi tractor-trailer jackknifed blocking one lane on Highway 4 near 280th St south of Jefferson. At 3:14 pm the sheriff assisted with four vehicles in the ditch on Highway 30 near T Ave. At 3:38 pm a deputy assisted with a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 4 near County Road E-57 (290th St) in Franklin Township. At 4:24 pm a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Highway 144 near 255th St south of Grand Junction. At 6:54 pm a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Highway 4 at County Road E-63 (330th St) in Franklin Township. Kevin Litterer, 52, of Lake View lost control of his 2018 Honda HRV. The vehicle entered the ditch, causing damage to the vehicle estimated at $1,500.

Wednesday, Feb. 13: At 12:16 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Scranton. At 1:18 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 144 near 150th St in Paton Township. Clint Flack, 25, of Jefferson was driving an Iowa DOT snow plow and the blade caught the railroad tracks, causing the blade to break off and forcing the truck into the east ditch. The blade bent the railroad track causing that section of railroad to be shut down. Damage to the truck was estimated at $5,000. Damage to the railroad track was estimated at $2,000.

Tuesday, Feb. 12: At 5:35 am a deputy was called to Scranton to issue five citations for violation of the city’s snow ordinance. At 12:34 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2100 block of 290th St in Washington Township.

Monday, Feb. 11: At 9:02 am a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 3:23 pm the sheriff and deputies, along with the Jefferson PD, the Iowa State Patrol, Jefferson fire department and Greene County EMS responded to an accident on Highway 30 at M Ave west of Jefferson. The accident involved a semi tractor-trailer and a car. Both drivers were transported to Greene County Medical Center by ambulance. The ISP investigated. At 4:57 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Grand Junction. At 5:08 pm the sheriff investigated a reported vehicle in the ditch on Highway 30 at Highway 25 north of Scranton. The vehicle was no longer present.

Sunday, Feb. 10: At 8:58 am a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch on Highway 144 just north of Highway 30 near Grand Junction. The vehicle was not located. At 9:55 am a deputy assisted a jailer with an inmate in the jail. At 1:30 pm a deputy was called to Churdan by a city official to write snow ordinance violations. At 7:20 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Feb. 9: At 2:21 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Wild Rose Casino. At 6:59 am the sheriff, a deputy, and fire departments from Grand Junction, Jefferson, Rippey, and Paton responded to a house fire at 313 E. Main St in Grand Junction. The residence was a total loss. The residents were unharmed. The house is owned by Roger and Vivalore Gallagher. At 2:37 pm a deputy investigated an accident on Highway 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction. Michael Roesch, 57, of Ogden was eastbound when he crossed the center line into the westbound lane. Cory Heiman, 44, of Carroll swerved to evade Roesch’s vehicle and entered the ditch. Roesch was cited for failure to maintain control. Neither vehicle was damaged. At 3:26 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Scranton.

Friday, Feb. 8: At 9:37 am a deputy investigated a semi tractor-trailer that had rolled onto its side at 190th St and County Road N-58 (A Ave) in Kendrick Township when the driver, Aaron Schulz, 44, of Breda cut a turn too short. Schulz was not injured; the rig was totaled. At 3:49 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault call. At 4:40 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in Rippey. At 11:58 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with a pursuit on 190th St. The vehicle was lost.

Thursday, Feb. 7: At 7:05 am a deputy was requested by the city of Churdan to investigate snow ordinance violations. At 2:53 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in Rippey. At 8:42 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 6: At 2:09 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in Scranton.

Tuesday, Feb. 5: At 8:50 am a deputy investigated suspicious noises in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 5:15 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Main St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Feb. 4: At 1:03 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in Grand Junction. At 6:29 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Jacob Gute, 26, of Carroll struck a deer with his 2016 Jeep Patriot. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $2,500. At 11:08 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop in the 400 block of W. Monroe St.

Sunday, Feb. 3: At 4:01 am a deputy assisted the Paton fire department with a fire alarm at the John Deere plant in Paton. No sign of fire was found. At 2:40 pm a deputy investigated a possible animal abuse complaint in Churdan.

Saturday, Feb. 2: At 5:23 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson. Dennis Duane Erlandson, 70, of Storm Lake was eastbound when he struck a deer. Damage to the driver’s side of the cab and box on Erlandson’s 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck was estimated at $5,000. At 11:49 pm a deputy investigated a possible propane leak in the 100 block of Merriam St in Farlan.

Friday, Feb. 1: At 6:47 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Highway 30 coming from Boone County. At 7:25 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Highway 30 coming from Carroll County.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
