Sheriff’s report – January 2019

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, Jan. 31: At 12:49 pm a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 200 block of Adaza St in Churdan.
Wednesday, Jan. 30: At 1:18 pm deputies assisted the Churdan fire department responding to smoke coming from an attic at the residence of 448 H Ave in Highland Township. It was determined the smoke was caused by a short in the electrical wiring. The residence suffered minimal damage due to the smoke and no injuries were reported. Other agencies responding included Jefferson and Lohrville fire departments and Greene County EMS. At 5:46 pm a deputy conducted a welfare check on a subject walking on Highway 30 near the Boone County line. At 7:57 pm a deputy assisted the Grand Junction fire department with a call of smoke coming from a roof in the 100 block of Hager St. East in Grand Junction. The Grand Junction fire department did not find any fire in the residence.

Tuesday, Jan. 29: Routine activity reported.

Monday, Jan. 28: At 4:03 pm a deputy assisted with an animal custody issue in the 900 block of X Ave in Junction Township. At 4:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in 1100 block of County Road E-57 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. At 6:21 pm deputies and the Jefferson fire department assisted the Grand Junction fire department with a residential fire in the 700 block of Railroad St E. in Grand Junction. The residence suffered substantial damage.

Sunday, Jan. 27: At 8:12 am a deputy responded to County Road E-53 west of Raccoon River bridge remove a deer from the roadway. At 11:34 am a deputy responded to Highway 30 and County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson to remove a deer from roadway. At 1:34 pm a deputy investigated a domestic disturbance in Churdan. At 2:50 pm a deputy investigated an assault complaint in Rippey. At 6:46 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in Grand Junction. At 10:26 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop in the 200 block of W. State St in Jefferson.

Saturday, Jan. 26: At 3:11 am a deputy investigated a possible fire along Highway 4 between 270th and 280th Sts in Grant Township. At 11:24 am a deputy investigated a theft complaint in the 600 block of 15th St. South in Grand Junction. At 11:41 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of suspicious persons in the 300 block of Highway 4 north of Churdan.

Friday, Jan. 25: At 12:13 pm a deputy investigated a non-reportable accident in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Thursday, Jan. 24: At 12:51 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 east of the Raccoon River bridge near County Road P-14 (JAve). Kyle McAleer, 20, of Scranton was westbound when he struck the deer. Damage to his 2009 Honda civic was estimated at $1,200. At 10:27 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction. At 4:37 pm Malay Thammathay, 33, of Des Moines was booked into the Greene County jail for trespass- first offense*. At 5:49 pm a deputy assisted Iowa State Patrol and Greene County EMS with a single vehicle accident on County Road E-53 at the Eureka Bridge west of Jefferson.

Wednesday, Jan. 23: At 5:47 am a deputy investigated property damage in the area of Main St East an 11th St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Jan. 22: At 1:54 am a deputy assisted the JPD with an arrest. At 11:29 pm a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Highway 144 near V Ave in Junction Township. Bryce Burkhardt, 20, of Jefferson lost control of his 2014 Ford Focus after a deer ran out in front of him. There was no damage to the vehicle.

Monday, Jan. 21: At 9:15 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton.

Sunday, Jan. 20: Routine activity reported.

Saturday, Jan. 19: Routine activity reported.

Friday, Jan. 18: At 5:36 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive-off from Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton. At 7:20 pm a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with an assault in Jamaica.

Thursday, Jan. 17: At 3:12 am a deputy arrested Jeremy Benedict, 28, of Perry on a arrest warrant for possession of methamphetamine. At 12:59 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 3:47 pm the sheriff and deputies conducted a search warrant at 1028 130th St in Highland Township. Rodney Halterman was arrested without incident. The Jefferson PD and the Iowa State Patrol assisted.

Wednesday, Jan. 16: At 8:25 am Christopher Quirk, 36, of Jefferson was booked into the jail on charges of burglary- third degree, forgery (two counts), and theft- second degree*. At 8:54 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2200 block of D Ave in Willow Township. At 4:55 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with a search warrant in Jamaica. At 11:51 pm a deputy investigated a structure fire in the 200 block of 300th St in Willow Township. The Coon Rapids fire department was on the scene. The cause of the fire was determined to be a wood stove.

Tuesday, Jan. 15: At 12:46 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Monday, Jan. 14: At 3:56 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1700 block of L Ave in Jackson Township. At 12:45 pm the sheriff and deputies checked a residence in the 2300 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) east of Dana for Rodney Halterman, 18, who is wanted on a Story County warrant for attempted murder. At 4:20 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction. At 6:30 pm a deputy conducted tobacco compliance checks throughout the county. Oly’s Corner in Jefferson was found in violation. There were no other businesses found in violation. At 7:16 pm deputies checked a residence in the 1000 block of 130th St in Highland Township for Rodney Halterman.

Sunday, Jan. 13: At 5:27 am a deputy investigated an alarm in the 200 block of Main St in Paton. At 10:08 am a deputy investigated an alarm in the 1000 block of E. Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 2:53 pm a deputy arrested Douglas Shutt, 57, of Grand Junction on a warrant for failure to affix tax stamp, possession of marijuana- first offense, and possession of methamphetamine- first offense*.

Saturday, Jan. 12: At 7:27 am a deputy investigated an alarm in the 1000 block of Sandoe St in Grand Junction. At 12:18 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 600 block of E. Lincoln Way. Ryan Brown, 47, of Jefferson was arrested for failure to pay child support*. At 4:12 pm a deputy assisted Ames PD with trying to locate Rodney Halterman. At 4:12 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 600 block of South 15th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Jan. 11: At 11:39 am a deputy investigated a theft complaint at Casey’s General Store in Scranton. At 8:02 pm a deputy assisted the Cumming County, NE, sheriff’s office with trying to locate a person in Scranton. At 11:43 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2300 block of 280th St in Washington Township.

Thursday, Jan. 10: At 1:01 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a fire near Highway 144 and 250th St south of Grand Junction. The fire was found to be a controlled burn. At 12:48 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Richard Whitver, 66, of Jefferson lost control of his 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and entered the ditch, totaling the vehicle. Whitver was cited for failure to maintain control. At 4:05 pm a deputy picked up a pit bull in the 200 block of 175th St in Kendrick Township and took it to the animal holding facility. At 6:30 pm the sheriff’s office conducted tobacco compliance checks and had no violations.

Wednesday, Jan. 9: At 5:16 am a deputy investigated a complaint of large piles of mud on the roadway on County Road E-57 (290th St near C Ave) in Willow Township. Marvin Krieger, 59, of Coon Rapids struck a large piece of frozen mud causing an estimated $1,000 damage to his Toyota Corolla. At 4:27 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction. At 5:33 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, Jan. 8: At 3:34 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a possible burglary in the 1000 block of N. West St. At 3:58 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop at the intersection of Highways 4 and 30.

Monday, Jan. 7: At 7:30 pm a deputy assisted the Dallas County sheriff’s office with our K-9 to attempt a track of a suspect who fled on foot in the Dawson area. At 3:34 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a possible burglary in the 1000 block of N. West St.

Sunday, Jan. 6: At 4:55 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey. At 9:59 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1000 block of State St in Scranton.

Saturday, Jan. 5: At 1:18 am a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 1400 block of 100th St in Dawson Township. At 8:03 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with a search near Grimmell Rd and Central Ave.

Friday, Jan. 4: At 1:08 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 600 block of 18th St North in Grand Junction. At 3:36 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 800 block of North St in Churdan. At 12:51 pm a deputy investigated an alarm in the 700 block of W Ave in Junction Township. At 4:28 pm a deputy investigated an abuse complaint in Scranton.

Thursday, Jan. 3: At 12:22 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Wild Rose Casino. At 3 am a deputy assisted a jailer who was assaulted by an inmate. Michael Olson, 57, was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations*. At 7:08 am the sheriff investigated a complaint of harassment of a public official. At 9:04 am a deputy investigated a theft complaint near County Roads P-46 (W Ave) and E-26 (170th St) east of Dana. At 10:47 am a deputy picked up suspected drug paraphernalia in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 1:18 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in Grand Junction. At 2:01 pm a deputy investigated a property dispute in Rippey.

Wednesday, Jan. 1: At 11:11 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1000 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 4:11 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in the 400 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:30 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with a search of a vehicle and an arrest at Gallup Rd and Mulberry St. Michael Olson, 57, of Jefferson was arrested for public intoxication, assault on a jailer, disorderly conduct, operating while intoxicated, and interference with official acts*.

 *In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
