Essay contest winners told

Winners of American Legion Post 11’s fifth grade essay contest were announced Dec. 21. Addison Gannon placed first. Her essay will be forwarded to district level competition. Trysten Naylor placed second and Callie Martin placed third.

Students were asked to write an essay on the topic “What the Flag Means to Me.” More than 70 students submitted essays.

The writers of the winning essays received cash prizes, and they’ll be invited to read their essays at the Memorial Day program in Jefferson.

Barb Labate, secretary/treasurer of Post 11, coordinated the essay contest as she has for several years.
