Animal shelter fundraising drive now in grant-writing stage

A team of grant writers is ready to start writing applications for funds for the new Greene County animal shelter.

Don Orris, who is coordinating the animal shelter project, has experienced grant writers Mary Weaver, Beth Vander Wilt and Sue Richardson on board. They visited the current animal shelter recently to take photos to bolster their grant applications.

“I’m very excited to have such outstanding people willing to donate their skills in grant writing,” Orris said. They will also have some help from Nick Sorenson. He assists the city with special projects as part of his building and zoning job.

The Jefferson city council on Tuesday approved a blanket resolution of support that will be used to accompany grant applications.

According to Orris, local fundraising for the project has netted more than $210,000 that can be used as matching funds in grant applications. Total cost of the project is $1.1 million.

Orris reminds area residents that donations to the animal shelter are tax deductible. Checks should be written to the City of Jefferson, with “Animal shelter” in the memo line. The money will be deposited into a dedicated account that will be used only for the shelter.
