Sheriff’s report – December 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Monday, Dec. 31: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Dec. 30: At 2:04 pm a deputy investigated a moving domestic issue at Highway 30 and County Road P-33 (S Ave).

Saturday, Dec. 29: At 12:55 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of Livingston St in Churdan.

Friday, Dec. 28: At 10:47 am a deputy transported two homeless subjects to a shelter in Ames. At 11:53 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search of a vehicle at Casey’s General Store in Jefferson.

Thursday, Dec. 27: Routine activity reported.

Wednesday, Dec. 26: At 5:57 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 4 near 330th St in Franklin Township. Anne Holman, 55, of Bayard struck a deer with a 2014 Volkswagen Passat. The estimated damage to the car was $3,500.At 12:32 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 10:13 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 700 block of N. Cedar St. Michael Olson, 57, of Jefferson was arrested for public intoxication, assault on a peace officer, disorderly conduct, and interference with official acts*.

Tuesday, Dec. 25: Routine activity reported.

Monday, Dec. 24: At 11:27 am a deputy located a stray dog in the 400 block of 340th St in Willow Township and transported the dog to the animal holding facility. At  11:50 am a deputy was requested by the city of Scranton to investigate a barking dog complaint in the 400 block of Madison St in Scranton.

Sunday, Dec. 23: At 5:28 am a deputy investigated a counterfeit $20 bill at Sparky’s One Stop in Churdan.

Saturday, Dec. 22: At 6:30 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of Bell St in Churdan. At 7:14 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on I Ave and 235th St in Jackson Township. Rebecca Patton, 25, of Coon Rapids struck a deer with a 2009 Toyota Rav4 causing an estimated $1,500 in damage.

Friday, Dec. 21: At 10:23 am a deputy was requested to issue a salvage tag for a deer on Highway 4 near 250th St south of Jefferson. When the caller and the deputy arrived, the deer was gone. The case was turned over to the DNR. At 2:44 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 400 block of 2nd St in Rippey.

Thursday, Dec. 20: At 1:14 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with a burglary investigation in the 500 block of N. Wilson Ave. At 5:40 pm a deputy investigated an alarm in the 2300 block of 330th St in Washington Township. At 11:21 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a fight at Doc’s Stadium in Jefferson. Seth Butler, 30, of Scranton was arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication*. Jared Wolfe, 40, of Bagley was arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication-second offense*.

Wednesday, Dec. 19: At 12:44 pm a deputy located a vehicle stolen out of Polk County in the 700 block of Railroad St in Grand Junction. Christopher Laurent, 49, of Grand Junction was charged with theft- third degree* in connection with the vehicle. Beth Laurent, 48, of Grand Junction was charged with theft- second degree* for property that was found in her possession that was stolen from a residence in Rippey on 12/10/2018. At 7:30 pm a deputy assisted Greene County secondary roads with traffic control while they removed a large amount of mud from the roadway on County Road P-33 (S Ave) near Highway 30. At 8:10 pm a deputy arrested Neal Schoon, 55, of Bayard on a warrant for domestic abuse assault impeding blood flow or airway*.

Tuesday, Dec. 18: At 3:22 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 900 block of 180th St in Bristol Township. At 4:20 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 2200 block of County Road E-18 (130th St) in Paton Township. At 4:56 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 500 block of Madison St in Scranton. At 5:18 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Oakland Ave east of Jefferson. Nickolas Sorensen, 39, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. The estimated damage to the pickup truck was $2,000.

Monday, Dec. 17: Routine activity reported.

Sunday, Dec. 16: At 4:35 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with a search of a vehicle in the 500 block of N. Elm St. At 11:42 am a deputy investigated a gas drive-off at Paton Pit Stop. At 10:10 pm a deputy, an Iowa state trooper, and the Jefferson PD tried to locate a possible drunk driver on Highway 30.

Saturday, Dec. 15: At 12:30 am the sheriff, a deputy, Jefferson chief of police and a officer conducted a search warrant in the 100 block of E. State St in Jefferson. At 2:01 am Daryn Mallory, 53 of Jefferson was booked into the jail for drug distribution to a person under age 18, possession or control of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, supplying a person underage alcohol- first offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 2:30 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the parking lot at the Greene County Community Center. At 8:25 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with an arrest in the 600 block of S. Olive St in Jefferson. At 11:22 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1500 block of T Ave in Junction Township. At 2:44 pm a deputy investigated a hunting complaint in the area of I Ave and 215th St in Bristol Township. At 3:25 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 900 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Dec. 14: At 12:09 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2100 block of Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 2:10 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in the 600 block of W. Paton St in Paton. At 7:13 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a teenager having a medical issue at Wilson St and Lincoln Way. At 8:12 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 600 block of S. 15th St in Grand Junction. At 9:34 pm a deputy investigated a reported single vehicle accident on Highway 4 and 140th St in Dawson Township. The vehicle was not involved in an accident.

Thursday, Dec. 13: At 6:32 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-53 (235th St) near Parkland Ave in Grant Township. The driver of the vehicle had left the scene. At 12:40 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of someone pointing a laser at them in the 200 block of 130th St in Cedar Township.

Wednesday, Dec. 12: At 12:26 am a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch on County Road E-19 (14oth St) near County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Cedar Township. There was no damage to the vehicle and no driver in the area. At 1:58 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 300 block of N. Oak St in Jefferson. At 7:59 am the sheriff and a deputy investigated a propane tanker truck that had a power line down on the truck. Scranton fire and Greene County EMS also responded to the scene in the 700 block of N-65 in Kendrick Township. Justin Venteicher, 37, of Jefferson was backing and struck a utility pole breaking, it off and causing the wire to land on the truck. There was no damage to the truck and nobody was injured. At 8 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 237th St near Jordan Ave in Jackson Township. A juvenile lost control of his 2006 Mazda 6 and struck the guard rail, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage to the vehicle. The guard rail was not damaged. At 4:05 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Cedar St in Scranton. At 4:37 pm the sheriff, deputies, and Greene County EMS responded to a single vehicle accident on Quest Avenue and County Road E-57 (305th St) in Franklin Township. Larry Richards, 81, of Jamaica failed to stop at the stop sign and went into the ditch at the T intersection. Richards was transported to the Dallas County Hospital. He was cited for failure to stop. The 2015 Chevrolet Malibu was totaled in the accident. At 4:45 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 900 block of 190th St in Bristol Township. At 6:42 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of 3rd St in Rippey.

Tuesday, Dec. 11: At 12:45 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Sparky’s One Stop. At 9:30 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad near County Road P-14 west of Jefferson.

Monday, Dec. 10: At 11:34 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 200 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey.

Sunday, Dec. 9: At 12:13 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 600 block of Highway 30 in Kendrick Township. At 9:10 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident in the 1100 block of County Road E-53 (240th St) in Jackson Township. Randy Christensen, 33, of Scranton struck a deer with a 2015 Buick Enclave, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage to the vehicle. At 5:36 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave east of Scranton. At 5:56 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Quest Ave near County Road E-53 (240th St) in Grant Township. James Lynch, 50, of Dawson struck a deer with a 1997 Dodge Ram pickup truck, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage to the vehicle.

Saturday, Dec. 8: At 1:25 am a deputy arrested Kylee Allbee, 23, of Harcourt for an arrest warrant for assault causing bodily injury*. At 6:13 am a deputy investigated a car- deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Amy Cummings, 60, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. The estimated damage to the vehicle was $1,500. At 10:59 am a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Highway 30 near T Ave west of Grand Junction. The vehicle was located and the driver was found to be having a medical emergency. Grand Junction rescue and Greene County EMS responded and transported the driver the Greene County Medical Center.

Friday, Dec. 7: At 2:18 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint on Highway 30 near Highway 25 north of Scranton. An Iowa Department of Transportation vehicle located the semi tractor-trailer. Gregory Hampton, 54, of Johnston was arrested for operating while under the influence. At 5:18 pm a deputy assisted a Cedar Falls agency with trying to locate a vehicle was involved in a hit and run. At 5:34 pm the sheriff and deputies responded to the 200 block of N. 2nd St in Lanesboro for a Carroll County deputy who needed assistance with an arrest.

Thursday, Dec. 6: At 12:29 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop. At 7:23 am a deputy and the Grand Junction fire department responded to a small fire on a wooden deck in the 800 block of E. Percival St in Grand Junction. At 11:40 pm a deputy investigated an alarm in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Dec. 5: At 5:44 am a deputy investigated a complaint of a strong gas odor in the 100 block of V Ave in Paton Township. At 7:48 am a deputy investigated a stolen vehicle in the 200 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. The vehicle was located in Audubon County. Joshua Ackerson, 30, of Ida Grove was arrested for several charges in Audubon County. At 5:59 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 at County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. Misty Brase, 42, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2013 Dodge Journey, causing an estimated $4,500 damage to the vehicle. At 10:21 pm a deputy assisted with locating a stolen vehicle near Rippey. The Boone County sheriff’s office located the car near Perry.

Tuesday, Dec. 4: At 8 am a deputy investigated an identity theft complaint in the 100 block of Sunset St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Dec. 3: At 5:27 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 600 block of County Road E-33 (190th St) in Kendrick Township. Trevor Michael Baugh, 23, of Churdan was eastbound when he struck a patch of ice on the roadway. He lost control of his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and went in the south ditch where the vehicle rolled. No injuries were reported. Baugh was citing for driving while license suspended and failure to have financial liability coverage – accident related. Damage to the vehicle exceed value, estimated at $3,000. At 6:19 pm a deputy investigated a deceased deer in the roadway near the 1000 block of County Road P-33 (S Ave) in Junction Township. At 8:31 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of Highways 30 and 144 at Grand Junction. The deputy arrested the driver, Christopher Richard Sowers, 46, for driving while barred*. He also cited Sowers for failure to provide financial liability and improper registration plate lamp.

Sunday, Dec. 2: At 4:59 pm a deputy investigated dogs being dropped off along County Road P-14 (J Ave). PAWS acquired the animals.

Saturday, Dec. 1: At 12:57 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson police officer in the 300 block of W. Central Ave. At 6:26 am a deputy investigated a domestic disturbance in the 800 block of 8th St in Scranton. At 10:50 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle in the 1000 block of 215th St in Bristol Township. DNR took the call due to possible hunters in the area. At 11:27 am a deputy assisted Grand Junction fire and rescue with a vehicle fire at the intersection of W. Main and 9th St. The vehicle was severely damaged and was towed from the scene.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
