The Greene County boys basketball team opens the 2018-19 home season Monday, Nov. 26, against Ogden. Twelve-year coach Chris Nelson heads the Ram team, assisted by Mark Renslow and Trey Tucker.

Last year’s team finished third in the Heart of Iowa Conference and won its first tournament game as Greene County. The Rams had five players earning all-conference honors.

Returning letter winners are senior Trey Hinote, a first team all-conference and sub-state selection; senior Lance Hughes, second team all-conference and junior Carter Morton.

Top newcomers are juniors Nick Breon, Caden Lowmiller, Tyler Miller, Eddie Goff, John Rosado, Cael Fisher, Skylar Ripperger and Jacob Hunter.

The team excels in speed, shooting, ballhandling and on the ball pressure. Improvement is needed in rebounding and off the ball defense, according to the coach.

Coach Nelson sees South Hamilton as the conference favorite, followed closely by Gilbert and Prairie City-Monroe. “The conference will be pretty solid from top to bottom,” noted the coach.

The Rams compiled a 12-11 record last season. Goals for this year include an above .500 record, top three in the conference, shoot 48 percent or better from the field and get some tournament wins.

“I think we have a chance to be pretty good,” declared Nelson.
