Betty Schaal, 1932 – 2018

Betty Schaal was born on the solstice, June 21, 1932, at home in Indianola, to Roy and Ethel (Lane) Whitehead. She passed from this life October 26, 2018, at the Greene County Medical Center long term care facility in Jefferson She lived her life to the age of 86 years, 4 months and 5 days.

Betty was the youngest of four girls in her family. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1951 and worked for brief time for United Airlines prior to her marriage. On June 21, 1954, Betty Whitehead was united in marriage to Carroll (Bill) Schaal Jr. of Jefferson at the Methodist Church in Indianola. To this union were born three children. Betty and Bill settled in Jefferson and raised their family. Betty helped Bill in his business but was mainly a wife and mom.

Betty was an active member of the community and her church, the First United Methodist, where she particularly enjoyed singing in the choir. She had served as president of the P.E.O., Friday Club, Greene County Medical Center Auxiliary and U.M.W. Betty was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Betty and Bill spent many happy hours with family and friends and enjoyed summers at their cabin on Woman Lake near Longville, MN.

Betty will be dearly missed by her family; husband Bill; daughters Laura Lynn Brones and husband Lynn of Johnston, and Samantha Rae Schaal of Cedar Falls; son Carroll and his wife Pamela of Mount Horeb, WI; and grandchildren John (Stephanie) Schaal, Brock (April) Brones, Anna Schaal (Zach) Miller, Brett Brones and Peter Schaal. Preceding her in death were her parents and three sisters, Jean, Ortha and Carolyn.

A celebration of Betty’s life was held Wednesday, Oct. 31, at the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating. Musical selections were sung by Gary Haupert and accompanied by Sheryl Sloan. Burial was made in the Jefferson City Cemetery.

Serving as honorary bearers were Betty’s grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson.

The family was assisted by Brown Funeral Home of Jefferson.
