Miss Rodeo Iowa contestant Brittany Gunn

Brittany Gunn, the 2013 Greene County Fair queen, is still competing in queen contests five years later.

Gunn, the Pony Express Double D Rodeo queen, competed for the title of Miss Rodeo Iowa in Fort Madison Sept. 6-8.  The competition included horsemanship, interviews, impromptu questions, a 1-1/2 minute speech and a written test.

Miss Rodeo Iowa travels across the country to make rodeo appearances, promoting the sport of rodeo and advocate for the western way of life. Miss Iowa Rodeo is expected to be knowledgeable about the rodeo and the equine industry.

Gunn was named Miss Congeniality and won the Larry Roberts Memorial Rodeo Spirit Award and the People’s Choice award. She was not crowned Miss Iowa Rodeo.

“I did not win the title but I made memories that will last me a lifetime,” Gunn said. “Many young girls start rodeo queening at a young age. Unfortunately, numbers in pageants have gone down. I ant to encourage any young girl to pursue something new, particularly running for a rodeo queen title. You don’t have to grow up with horses or compete in rodeo. You can do anything you set your mind to.
