Sheriff’s report – August 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Friday, Aug. 31: At 9:26 am a deputy investigated a theft on Highway 4 near 305th St in Franklin Township. At 3:53 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on 300th St and Taft Ave in Washington Township. Steven Smith, 41, of Jefferson was arrested for driving while barred*. He was also cited for operating a non-registered vehicle and failure to provide proof of insurance. At 7:19 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 400 block of 210th St in Kendrick Township. At 7:22 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Aug. 30: At 10:25 am deputes conducted a search warrant at a residence in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Drug paraphernalia was located. At 12 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident on Apple Ave near 250th St in Scranton Township. Joshua Stewart, 33, of Callender was operating his 2016 Peter Built semi tractor-trailer and struck the mirror of another semi that kept going. The estimated damage to Stewart’s truck was $750 . The other semi was not located.

Wednesday, Aug. 29: At 1:30 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 200 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction. At 11:39 am deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant.

Tuesday, Aug. 28: At 3:58 am the sheriff, deputies, Greene County EMS, Jefferson fire, and the Jefferson PD investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 near L Ave. A 2004 Peter Built tractor and trailer eastbound hauling scrap metal lost control and slid on its side, dumping the scrap metal on the roadway. Driver Terry Smith, 56, of Lake View was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS for possible injuries. He was cited for failure to maintain control. At 4:31 am the sheriff, Jefferson PD, Jefferson fire, Grand Junction fire, and Greene County EMS responded to a fire at Power Lift in Jefferson. There was extensive damage from the fire.

Monday, Aug. 27: At 11:33 am the sheriff investigated a trespass complaint in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 11:43 am a deputy investigated and assisted with traffic control for a seed tender that fell off a trailer on Highway 4 near 150th St in Dawson Township. At 3:19 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 200 block of Main St in Paton. At 7:38 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Cedar Township. At 7:59pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity at 16th and Railroad Sts in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Aug. 25: At 4:03 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1200 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Bristol Township. At 7:29 pm a deputy put cattle back in the fence on Highway 144 near 190th St in Junction Township. At 8:14 pm a deputy investigated a fight on Main St in Grand Junction.

Friday, Aug. 24: At 12:03 pm a deputy tried to locate an aggressive dog in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 4:22 pm the sheriff, deputies, Greene County EMS, and Grand Junction rescue responded to a report of a male subject falling from a wind turbine on X Avenue near 210th St northeast of Grand Junction.

Thursday, Aug. 23: At 12:08 pm a deputy investigated a theft of a vehicle in the 200 block of Main St in Paton. Working with Boone County and Dallas County sheriff’s offices and the Perry PD, the vehicle was located in Perry. Estavan Jones, 26, of Missouri was arrested for theft- first degree* and transported to the Greene County jail.

Wednesday, Aug. 22: At 6:41 am a deputy investigated a theft of a vehicle in the 300 block of S. 16th St in Grand Junction. At 3:50 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 2000 block of T Ave in Washington Township. At 10:18 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in the 100 block of 140th St in Cedar Township.

Monday, Aug. 20: At 10:57 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a theft in the 600 block of N. Olive St. At 6:34 pm a deputy investigated a report of cattle on the railroad tracks at County Road P-46 (W Ave) and Highway 30 east of Grand Junction.

Sunday, Aug. 19: At 12:39 am a deputy assisted with cattle on the roadway on Highway 4 and 210th St north of Jefferson. At 10:22 am a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 1100 block of Highway 4 in Hardin Township. A vehicle had struck a mailbox and left the scene. At 2:06 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD a domestic assault call.

Saturday, Aug. 18: At 12:36 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 9:06 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 1:51 pm a deputy investigated a two-car accident on Highway 144 and County Road E- 18 near Paton. Trina Donner, 30, of Sac City was driving a 2008 Cadillac DTS on Highway 144 when Hunter Andermann, 33, of Sorrento, LA, didn’t see the stop sign on E-18 and struck Donner’s vehicle. Andermann was driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander. There were no injuries. Andermann was cited for failure to obey a stop sign. Both vehicles were totaled in the accident. At 3:54 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction.

Friday, Aug. 17: At 1:39 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault call.

Thursday, Aug. 16: At 7:34 am a deputy assisted with putting a cow back in its fence on County Road E-63 (330th St) and B Ave in Willow Township. At 10:13 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 1900 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 10:16 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction. Colleen Anderson, 80, of Rippey was turning off Highway 30 onto P-46 when she struck the front end of a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox stopped at the stop sign. There were no injuries. Anderson was cited for improper turn. Damage to her 2003 Nissan Murano was estimated at $5,000. The stopped vehicle operated by Brian Schacherer, 37, of Ankeny. Damage to that vehicle was also estimated at $5,000. At 2:42 pm a deputy investigated an internet scam in the 300 block of 19th Street S in Grand Junction. At 5:22 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 1800 block of N. Elm St in Jefferson.

Wednesday, Aug. 15: At 12:04 pm the sheriff, deputies, Jefferson fire department, Greene County EMS, Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement investigated a two-vehicle fatal accident on Highway 4 at County Road E-57 (290th St). The accident is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Tuesday, Aug. 14: At 7:30 am a deputy investigated an abandoned motorcycle in the 1000 block of County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township. At 4:15 pm a deputy investigated a report of cattle out on 255th Street and County Road P-30 (Quaker Ave) in Grant Township. At 8:37 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1500 block of 222nd St in Grant Township.

Monday, Aug. 13: At 4:35 am a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 2000 block of 305th St in Washington Township. Jeremy Benedict, 28, of Perry was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.* At 10:09 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 500 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 1:50 pm a deputy investigated drug paraphernalia that was found in the 600 block of School St in Churdan. At 3:45 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint on Highway 144 near Grand Junction. At 5:24 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a pursuit in Jefferson.

Sunday, Aug. 12: At 2:22 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 3:21 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault at Spring Lake. At 7 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 500 block of Jefferson St in Scranton.

Saturday, Aug. 11: At 5:05 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 200 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction. At 10:42 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint near the water tower in Scranton.

Friday, Aug. 10: At 10:15 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of an illegal burn in Scranton.

Thursday, Aug. 9: At 12:49 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 7:20 pm the sheriff, deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Greene County EMS and the Jefferson fire department responded to a car-motorcycle accident on County Road E-53 at County Road P-14 in Jackson Township. The ISP investigated the fatal accident.

Wednesday, Aug. 8: At 8:44 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 12:17 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 6:27 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Austin Tucker, 19, of Boone struck a parked 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck. There was less than $500 in damage to both vehicles.

Tuesday, Aug. 7:  At 9:12 am a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 2:31 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 300 block of N. 13th St in Grand Junction.  At 6:42 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault near the Grand Junction pool on Elizabeth St.

Monday, Aug. 6: At 12:29 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on 260th St and the Highway 144 diagonal in Junction Township. Kristi Holz, 60, of Churdan failed to yield the right of way and struck a vehicle driven by Ann Schapman, 62, of Carroll. There were no injuries. Holz was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Damage to her 2007 Saturn Vue was estimated ay $5,000. Damage to Schapman’s 2013 Nissan Murano exceeded value. Both vehicles were toed from the scene. At 6:38 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township.

Sunday, Aug. 5: At 1:41 pm a deputy investigated a possible fight in progress in in the 500 block of South St in Paton.

Saturday, Aug. 4: At 9:20 am a deputy assisted with cattle out in the area of 330th Street and Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 5:53 pm a deputy investigated a tractor/trailer unit with an unsafe load of hay on Highway 4 south of Jefferson. At 7:48 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:17 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 190th St and Emerald Ave in Bristol Township. At 9:38 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-53 east of Jefferson. Josefina Daugdaug Stevens, 70, of Jefferson was eastbound approaching the “S” curves when a deer came out of the west ditch. Stevens struck the animal. Damage to her 2010 Toyota Prius was estimated at $2,500.

Friday, Aug. 3: At 12:10 am a deputy investigated a stolen vehicle in the 1600 block of 305th St in Franklin Township. The vehicle was recovered shortly after with subject taken into custody. At 1:12 pm a deputy assisted with a work-related accident on 144 diagonal at County Road P-46 in Rippey. Greene County EMS also responded and tended to a worker whose leg was run over by another worker backing a trailer. At 3:51 pm a deputy assisted with a combine driver losing a tire in the 1900 block on 250th St south of Jefferson. At 6:53 pm a deputy was advised of a train with smoke coming from a car, heading west near Carroll County. This was passed onto UPRR. At 11:28 pm a deputy assisted the Perry PD with locating a subject in Rippey.

Wednesday, Aug. 1: At 5:42 pm a deputy apprehended a juvenile male at Jefferson and Locust Sts in Scranton for driving while license revoked. He was later booked into the county jail and then released to a parent’s custody. At 8:52 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 400 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
