Time for Hometown Teams warm-up

“Pre-game” activities next week will prepare the community for the opening of the Smithsonian Institution’s Hometown Teams exhibit, slated to open Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Greene County Historical Museum.

The Sierra Community Theatre will show two baseball classics with free admission. “A League of Their Own” (1992) will be on the big screen Monday, Aug. 6, at 7 pm and Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 2 and 7 pm. “Field of Dreams” (1989) will be featured Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7 pm and Thursday, Aug. 9, at 2 and 7 pm.

The Greene County Singers will salute Greene County teams by singing the fight songs from county high schools next Tuesday at 5:30 pm during the farmers market. The choir will sing fight songs from Dana, Cooper, Paton, Rippey, Churdan, Scranton, Grand Junction, East Greene, Paton-Churdan, and Greene County. Audience participation is encouraged.

The lyrics for the fight songs were gathered for the Singers by Chuck Offenburger.

The Hometown Teams exhibit will be open Aug. 11 through Sept. 23. Hours are Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm; Sundays from 12 to 6 pm; Wednesdays from 1to 6 pm; and Thursdays from 3 to 9 pm. There is no admission charge. School tours are also planned.

The exhibit examines the many roles that sports play in American society. “Hometown sports are more than just games – they shape our lives and unite us and celebrate who we are as Americans,” press information explains.

The exhibit is brought to Greene County by Jefferson Matters: Main Street and Main Street Iowa.
