Rippey man in head-on collision on Hwy 20

A Rippey man was involved in a fatal head-on collision July 31 on Highway 20 east of Correctionville in Woodbury County.

The accident occurred at 1:56 pm. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Matthew William McNeill, 29, of Rippey was westbound on Highway 20 driving a 2011 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer owned by McNeill Trucking, LLC, hauling hazardous material.

Robert Ray Brewer, 58, of Utica, SD, was eastbound driving a 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Brewer crossed the centerline and the two vehicles collided head-on.

Brewer was wearing a seatbelt but died at the scene.

McNeill was transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City for possible injuries. Damage to his rig was estimated at $150,000. The Sioux City fire department determined no hazardous material was spilled or damaged.

According to the Woodbury County sheriff’s office, the crash closed Highway 20 for 5-1/2 hours. Other agencies responding to the scene were DOT motor vehicle enforcement, DOT maintenance, the Correctionville fire department, the Correctionville ambulance, Woodbury County EMS, Siouxland Paramedics, Stockton Towing and the Yankton, SD, County sheriff.

Information from the Iowa State Patrol post in Cherokee notes that a thorough investigation will be completed over several weeks using evidence from the scene, pending test results, and information gathered from the vehicles involved.
