Reminder: Free lunch at school this summer

More than 200 youngsters have already enjoyed free lunches this summer and there’s room for more kids, and adults, too.

The Greene County Schools are serving a free lunch weekdays from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the elementary school, 401 E. Russell St in Jefferson, and from 11 am to 12:30 pm at the Grand Junction Community Center, 212 Main St East in Grand Junction.  The program will  end Aug. 4; there will be no lunch served July 4.

All residents ages 18 and younger of the Greene County school district can eat lunch at no charge. Adults are welcome but must pay $3.25.

Transportation is available from Scranton to Jefferson and from Rippey to Grand Junction. Pick-up time at the Scranton Community Center and at the Rippey public library is at 11:15 am, with drop-off time at 12:20 at the same locations.

Students in grades K-8 can double up summer school with lunch. According to district reading specialist Julie Neal, of the 190 students for whom summer school was recommended, 110 attended last week. Like last year, part of their time is spent on project-based learning, with students completing a project that involves the community.
