Central Christian tells summer activities

Summer Youth Theatre  auditions net week

Central Christian Church of Jefferson extends the invitation to all to join in on some fun and faith-building summer activities.

“It’s been a process, but our church leadership has decided to make an investment of time, resources, and energy, in the fine arts in Greene County. We have so many artists, musicians and writers among our membership, and what better way to praise God than through the arts? We have a beautiful and functionable space for creating art, we want to open it up to the community, said Nicole Friess Schilling, artistic director at the church.

Central Christian Church has undergone several major renovations in the past few years, including the remodeling of the third floor into an arts space, complete with an open visual arts studio and practice rooms for musicians.

The Summer Fine Arts Experience begins Wednesday, June 13, from 10 am to noon. Students who have completed kindergarten and older are invited to come and create in the studio. Guided lessons are planned, including drawing, painting, mixed media, pottery and more.

Auditions for Summer Youth Theatre will be held Monday, June 11, from 1 to 3 pm at the church. Students who have completed grades kindergarten and up are invited to participate. All who audition will receive a speaking role. The Youth Theatre is under the direction of Friess-Schilling.

The performance is slated for Saturday, July 21. The group will rehearse Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 1- 3 pm. Students enrolled in the both the morning arts session and theatre on Wednesdays will be provided with a meal between session. Both programs are free, though donations to help off-set costs, are appreciated.

The Summer Youth Theatre traces its “lineage” back to the Jefferson park and recreation department’s Kelso Park Players more than two decades ago.

“Central Christian has a beautiful and functional space for our youth theatre. We are thrilled to be here again and look forward to another great production. The third floor art studio is a fabulous space for inspiring young artists and creating,” Friess Schilling said.

The church is already meeting on Sunday evenings at 5:30 pm at Pleasant Hill Chapel (Squirrel Hollow church) south of Jefferson. This ‘outside the walls’ service is focused on community building, spiritual exploration, art and fellowship. A meal is included, along with hands-on arts activities for all ages. The theme is Revival, but not a revival in the sense of ‘fire and brimstone’.

“The revival we are hoping to engage folks in is a revival of one’s spirit, faith and appreciation for all that surrounds us. A time to un-plug and connect with others and your world. ALL are welcome, regardless of faith or affiliation,” Schilling said.

The gatherings will be held Sunday evenings through July 22 at the historic chapel (located southeast of Jefferson off County Road P-30 at R Ave.).

Each week has a different theme and special guest speaker(s). A cemetery walk, with historical representations of early settlers recounting their faith journeys, will be held June 24.
