Greene County district court, week ending May 24

In Greene County district court James Michael Lefeber, 36, of Jefferson was sentenced to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary- third degree, amended from burglary- first degree. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on probation for three years. He must reside at a residential correctional facility until he obtains the maximum benefits. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. Lefeber was fined $750with a $262.50 surcharge. The court ruled he is unable to pay restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $615.25. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)

Jonathan Phillip Michael Kennedy, 30, of Grand Junction was sentenced May 9 to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine- second offense. He must reside at a residential correctional facility until he attains the maximum benefits. He must also undergo a mental health evaluation and follow the recommended treatment at his own expense. Kennedy was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge. Court costs were $222.35 (Sentencing: McCarville)

Craig Steven Johnson, 40, of Jefferson was sentenced to two days in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of operating while intoxicated- first offense. He must complete at his own expense the recommendations of a substance abuse evaluation he has already undergone. He must also complete a community college drinking drivers school. In lieu of the jail time and the drinking drivers school he may complete the Des Moines Area Community College 48-hour alcohol education program. Johnson was fined $1,250 with a $437.50 surcharge and a $10 surcharge for drug abuse resistance education (DARE). Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Jennifer Marie Ashby, 45, of Jefferson was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge after she pleaded guilty to a charge of false report to public entity (simple misdemeanor), amended from false report to public entity of indictable offense. She must pay $100 restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees and $60 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignments as follows: Cynthia Marie Clousing, 30, of Ida Grove, criminal mischief-fourth degree; Jaime Candelario Mercado, 36, of Webster City, OWI- second offense and driving while license barred; Justin Ray Lopez, 20, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana- second offense; Frank L. Farel, 38, of Grand Junction, OWI- second offense and possession of marijuana- second offense; and Jacob Mario Lopez, 23, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana- first offense. Trial dates were set for July 17 in every case.

Cases were initiated as follows:  Justin Bryant Rule, 27, of Cleg Center, KS, OWI- first offense; Brian Gary Brotherson, 55, of Lake View, possession of methamphetamine; and Paul Richard Nelson, 44, of Jefferson, OWI- second offense.
