Sheriff’s report – May 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Thursday, May 31: At 12:24 am a deputy investigated a go-cart on the streets in Scranton. At 12:42 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Dana. At 12:53 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 and X Ave east of Grand Junction. Sydney Schiltz, 18, of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2013 Nissan Altima. The estimated damage to the vehicle was $3,000. At 9:58 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 2200 block of B Ave in Willow Township.

Wednesday, May 30: At 11:52 am the sheriff, deputies, Greene County EMS, and Jefferson fire department responded to a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 near H Ave east of Scranton. Steven Murphy, 59, of Jefferson was driving his 1991 Dodge X250 eastbound when a tire blew out, causing his vehicle to enter the westbound lane. Murphy side swiped a 2017 Chevrolet K3500 with a box camper, driving by James Symans, 72, of South Dakota. The camper came out of the truck and blocked the eastbound lanes and had a propane leak. Both vehicle were totaled in the accident. Both drivers were taken to the Greene County Medical Center with minor injuries. Murphy was issued a citation for failure to maintain control. At 4:04 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of Third St in Rippey. At 7:10 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 about 3 miles east of Jefferson. When the deputy arrived he found the 1979 Harley Davidson Flathead motorcycle was stolen out of the Jefferson. The driver of the motorcycle was Jody Schad, 42, of Jefferson. The motorcycle was totaled in the accident. Schad was taken to the Greene County Medical Center with serious injuries. Charges are pending in the case.

Monday, May 28: At 3:04 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search in the 600 block of East Lincoln Way. At 6:55 am a deputy located a road blow up in the 1900 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Greenbrier Township. At 4:13 pm a deputy investigated a theft at County Road E-18 (170th St) and County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township.

Sunday, May 27: At 2:04 am the sheriff, a deputy, Greene County EMS, and Jefferson fire department responded to Flack River Farm west of Jefferson for two people injured. Two people were using the zip line and fell into shallow water causing serious injuries to both subjects. At 2:13 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest on Highway 30 near Grimmell Rd. At 4:52 am a deputy assisted the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office with locating a person who was reported missing. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1700 block of R Ave in Grant Township.

Saturday, May 26: At 5:20 pm a deputy located a road blow up in the 1700 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Jackson Township. At 5:38 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident at Spring Lake Park. Bradley Hoyle, 49, of Johnston slid his motorcycle in loose gravel and was transported by ambulance to the Greene County Medical Center emergency room. Greene County EMS and Grand Junction rescue responded to the scene. Damage to Hoyle’s 2007 Honda motorcycle was estimated at $2,000. At 11:42 pm a deputy assisted the Union Pacific railroad with a crossing problem on Parkland Ave east of Jefferson.

Friday, May 25: At 5:40 pm a deputy investigated a backing accident at 14th and Hager Sts in Grand Junction. Roger Gallagher, 54, of Grand Junction parked his 2018 Honda motorcycle behind John Trucks’ 2004 Ford F150 pickup truck. Trucks, 57 of Grand Junction, backed his pickup truck, striking the motorcycle and causing minor damage to it.

Thursday, May 24: At 1:33 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search in the 200 block of S. Elm St. At 7:25 am a deputy assisted with getting cattle back in the fence on County Road E-53 near Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. At 10:51 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 12:50 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 8:39 pm a deputy assisted Boone County with a wind turbine fire near Beaver.

Wednesday, May 23: At 10:49 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 12:02 pm a deputy investigated a fraud case in the 900 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 12:30 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant in the 100 block of E. Central Ave in Jefferson. At 7:10 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 4 near 280th St south of Jefferson that led to the arrest of Justin Rule, 27, of Perry for operating while intoxicated*.

Tuesday, May 22: At 8:52 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 700 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 6:53 pm a deputy picked up a dog running at large in the 600 block of North St in Churdan and took the dog to the animal holding facility in Jefferson.

Monday, May 21: At 12:19 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 700 block of Wild Rose Lane. At 10:36 am a deputy investigated criminal mischief in the 600 block of A Ave in Cedar Township. At 6:22 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 6:31 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 600 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 7:53 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 8:38 pm a deputy removed a deer from the roadway on County Road E-63 (330th St) and K Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Sunday, May 20: At 5:17 pm a deputy picked up an abandoned bicycle in the 700 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 6;16 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad tracks at Parkland Ave west of Jefferson. At 8:56 pm a deputy located an unattended campfire at McMahon Access in Scranton township; he extinguished the fire.

Saturday, May 19:  At 3:10 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 west of Jefferson. Jason Payne, 39, of Rockwell City struck a deer, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage to his 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Friday, May 18: At 7:38 am a deputy investigated a call of some puppies in the ditch on County Road E-53 east of Jefferson. They were found to be coyotes. At 8:30 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint at Sparky’s One Stop in Churdan. At 2:56 pm a deputy investigated a car fire at Hager and 6th Sts in Grand Junction. The 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring was owned by Brett Grundon. The vehicle was a total loss; the cause of the fire is still under investigation. At 5:16 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of S. 7th St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, May 17: At 8:05 am a deputy assisted with two dogs brought to the Law Enforcement Center from out in the county. The animals were turned over to PAWS. At 2:50 pm a deputy investigated an accident that occurred in 1100 block of Highway 144 north of Grand Junction. William Ray Richards, 42, of Coon Rapids was driving for Hamilton Redi-Mix. He was operating 2011 Peterbilt cement truck northbound on Highway 144 when he crossed the center line and went into the west ditch, causing the truck to flip onto the driver’s side. Richards, not wearing seatbelt, was trapped inside until Jefferson firefighters arrived on the scene to assist getting him out. Greene County EMS was on the scene with assistance from Unity Point Air for possible injuries. Grand Junction rescue was the scene for assistance. Estimated damage to truck is $150,00 and a tow company assisted with the removal of the vehicle. At 8:39 pm a deputy investigated livestock out in the 1000 block of 180th St in Bristol Township.

Wednesday, May 16: At 1:10 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a fight at the intersection of W. Adams and N. Vine Sts.

Tuesday, May 15: At 6:38 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 500 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 10:30 am the sheriff assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with an arrest near 305th St and L Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 1:18 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 3:53 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 4th St in Rippey. At 2 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1200 block of County Road E-57 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. At 8:04 pm a deputy investigated a minor with tobacco in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Monday, May 14: At 1 am a deputy located a vehicle on the side of the road on Highway 30 at L Ave west of Jefferson. James Holmberg, 52, of Boone was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 3:14 am a deputy and the sheriff responded to a burglary in progress to Casey’s General Store in Scranton. Johnnie Jackson, 55, of Scranton was arrested for burglary- third degree, criminal mischief, interference with official acts, and theft- fourth degree. At 12 pm a deputy arrested Kylene Rabourne, 39, of Grand Junction for theft- first degree, forgery, and identity theft more than $1,000 but less than $10,000*. At 6:30 pm a deputy tried to locate a dog running at large in the 800 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, May 13: At 10:41 pm a deputy investigated a theft of gas at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction.

Saturday, May 12: At 5:14 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2000 block of 190th St in Paton Township. At 4:29 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle property damage accident in the 500 block of Bell St in Churdan. Elizabeth Roper, 16, of Churdan failed to yield and struck a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by Nathaniel Byerly, 26, of Churdan. Roper was cited for failure to yield. Damage to her 1998 Honda Accord was estimated at $2,500. Damage to Byerly’s pickup truck was also estimated at $2,500.

Friday, May 11: At 1:30 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 400 block of 16th St N in Grand Junction. At 10 am a deputy investigated a complaint of child neglect in Churdan. At 1:49 pm the sheriff picked up a 3-year-old who was found walking near Highway 30 in Grand Junction and returned the child to its parents. At 6:12 pm a deputy investigated in the 900 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction a bullying incident that had happened at school. At 6:49 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1800 block of 256th St in Grant Township.

Thursday, May 10: At 4:45 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of Third St in Rippey. At 5:11 pm a deputy located a piece of metal sticking up from the S Ave railroad crossing.

Wednesday, May 9: At 2:23 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 11:01 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, May 8: Routine activity reported.

Monday, May 7: At 8:53 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 900 block of Sand St in Churdan. At 10:50 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 5:13 pm a deputy investigated a fire in the 200 block of 6th St in Grand Junction. The Grand Junction fire department was able to extinguish the fire. Charges are pending for arson. At 8:52 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll PD with locating a subject in Adaza. At 10:38 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Sunday, May 5: At 10:16 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with traffic control on Highways 4 and 30 for a spill. The Jefferson fire department cleaned the spill. At 6:19 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 500 block of Main St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, May 5: At 3:32 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault in the 1300 block of Westwood Dr. At 9:45 am a deputy investigated a report of gun shots somewhere in Scranton. At 2:41 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. At 6:30 pm a deputy investigated a wash out on the roadway in the 1300 block of County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township. At 11 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest on Highway 4 near the Henderson Park river access.

Friday, May 4: At 3:37 am a deputy assisted getting a train engineer who had a medical issue out of a train on Maple St in Scranton. At 10:41 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2300 block of Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 11:37 am a deputy investigated an abuse complaint in the 300 block of 8th St in Grand Junction. At 10:58 pm a deputy investigated a fire at the John Deere plant in Paton. The Paton fire department responded and found an overheated air compressor.

Thursday, May 3: At 8:34 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 200 block of Main St in Scranton. At 6:47 pm a deputy tried to locate a pig running at large in the 100 block of County Road E-53 (250th St) in Scranton Township.

Wednesday, May 2: At 3:59 pm a deputy investigated a child neglect complaint in Churdan. At 7:56 a deputy assisted the JPD with a welfare check in Jefferson.

Tuesday, May 1:  At 2:37 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident at I Ave and 240th St (County Road E-53) west of Jefferson. Wilmer Flores, 31, of Jefferson was eastbound on 240th St and dropped off the roadway onto the shoulder. He lost control of his 2013 Ford F150 and rolled three times. The airbags deployed and he was wearing his seat belt. Flores was not injured by damage to his pickup truck was estimated to exceed value. At 9:28 am a deputy investigated a check fraud from Home State Bank. At 3:49 pm a deputy assisted a probation officer with a search in the 500 block of E. Clark St in Jefferson. At 4:59 pm a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with an assault on Highway 25 just into Guthrie County. At 8:12 pm a deputy assisted the Carroll County sheriff’s office with a domestic assault in the 2600 block of Zephyr Ave.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
