The Greene County boys soccer team competed in the Bondurant-Farrar tournament Saturday and went 1-1 with a 1-0 victory over Grinnell, followed by a 4-2 loss to Newton.

Coach Carl Behne said he thought the team played well against larger schools. About the Newton match, the coach added, “We had two goal attempts go off the top post.”

Ram senior Leo Marques, an international student from Brazil, is the leading boys’ soccer goal scorer in the state. Marques has 29 goals in 14 matches and has been a key in the Rams putting up a 9-6 record in the first year of soccer at Greene County High School. There are less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

The girls varsity soccer team played in a tournament Saturday in Creston and won by forfeit vs. Centerville.

Playing Boone and leading 1-0 with time running out, the Toreadors scored with 1.2 seconds left in the second half to send the game into overtime. Neither team scored in OT and it came down to a shootout which went to Boone by a final score of 4-1. The Rams are 2-9 on the season.

Freshman Makayla Kafer had the Greene County goal on a break-away.
