Sheriff’s report – April 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Sunday, April 29: At 12:35 pm a deputy investigated two unattended children in the 900 block of Cedar St in Scranton. At 8:25 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, April 28:  At 3:24 pm a deputy investigated a firearm found in the dich in the 700 block of 230th St in Scranton Township. At 7:20 pm a deputy investigated a stop sign missing  from the intersection of Highway 144 and County Road E-26 at Dana. At 8:16 pm a deputy investigated a noise complaint in Paton.

Friday, April 27: At 10:26 am the Greene County sheriff’s office, Boone County sheriff’s office and ATF conducted a search warrant at 2337 170th St (County Road E-57) in Junction Township. Michael Eberle, 67, of Dana was arrested for felon in possession of firearms.* At 5:08 pm a deputy investigated a power line that was struck by a tractor in the 1400 block of County Road E-13 (110th St) in Highland Township.

Thursday, April 26: At 3:15 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 1:06 pm the sheriff assisted with a grass fire in the area of 310th St and Highway 4 in Franklin Township. The Jefferson fire department responded and extinguished the fire. At 1:38 pm the sheriff, a deputy, the JPD and Jefferson fire department assisted with a small oil spill on the roadway on Highway 4 near 265th St south of Jefferson. At 6:18 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Scranton. At 7:33 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of cattle out in the 800 block of County Road P-14 (I Ave) in Bristol Township. At 7:43 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1600 block of D Ave in Scranton Township.

Wednesday, April 25: At 8:41 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2300 block of County Road E-18 (130th St) in Paton Township. At 11:30 am a deputy investigated a child neglect complaint in the 700 block of School St in Churdan. At 3:08 pm a deputy assisted DHS with an investigation in the 600 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 4:20 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 900 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 5 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint at a hog confinement on County Road E-63 (330th St) near K Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Tuesday, April 24: At 6:46 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 500 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. Tony Hatting, 45, was arrested for domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness.*

Monday, April 23: At 7:07 am a deputy witnessed an accident that was covered by the JPD in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way. The deputy could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the 2005 Ford Taurus that was being driven by Jacob Lopez, 23, of Jefferson. Lopez was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.*

Sunday, April 22: At 1:20 pm a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint in the 900 block of 230th St in Jackson Township. At 3:14 pm a deputy investigated a burglary call in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 11:28 pm a deputy assisted the Ralston fire department with a ditch fire in the 100 block of 177th St in Kendrick Township. At 11:54 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Friday, April 20:  At 1:47 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1400 block of County Road E-57(290th St) in Greenbrier Township.

Thursday, April 19: At 12:34 am a deputy assisted the Scranton fire department with a vehicle that caught on fire in the parking lot of Scranton Manufacturing. At 5:15 am assisted the Paton fire department with hay bales set aflame in the 800 block of L Ave in Bristol Township.

Wednesday, April 18: At 2:59 pm a deputy investigated a vicious dog complaint in the 900 block of Main St in Grand Junction.  At 7:23 pm a deputy investigated a possible intoxicated driver in Grand Junction. Frank Laverne Farel, 38, was arrested and booked into the county jail for operating while under the influence of alcohol-second offense and possession of marijuana- second offense.

Tuesday, April 17: At 1:27 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a driving complaint in the 1100 block of Westwood Drive in Jefferson. At 2:18 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 600 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Monday, April 16: At 9:45 am a deputy investigated a fraud case that was started on Facebook. At 9:45 pm a deputy investigated a high traffic complaint in Scranton.

Sunday, April 15: At 8:33 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint that was found to have occurred in Fort Dodge.

Saturday, April 14: At 4:10 am a deputy assisted a JPD officer with an arrest.   At 11:58 am a deputy investigated a gas drive off in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton.

Friday, April 13: At 12:10 pm a deputy investigated a fraud complaint in the 900 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 3:08 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and 18th St in Grand Junction. Maryssa Soder, 19, of Boone was westbound on Highway 30 driving a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Dainlynn Greer, 17, of Ames was also westbound, driving a 2009  Ford Explorer and following Soder. Greer failed to slow when Soder slowed to turn off Highway 30 and struck the rear bumper of Soder’s vehicle. Greer was cited for failure to have a driver’s license and failure to ensure a safe and clear distance. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $5,000. Damage to Soder’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. At 4:10 pm a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 1500 block of Highway 4 in Dawson Township. At 5:05 pm a deputy investigated a phone scam in the 16000 block of P Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:59 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Jefferson PD with storm response. At 8:05 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-53 (237th St) at Jordan Ave in Jackson Township. David Milakovich of Jefferson struck a deer with a 2011 Ford Explorer causing an estimated $5,000 in damage to the truck.

Thursday, April 12: At 4:29 pm a deputy assisted a probation officer in the 500 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 5:07 pm an officer assisted the JPD with an arrest. At 8 pm the sheriff, deputies and the JPD conducted a narcotics search warrant at 1109 Lincoln St in Scranton. Marijuana, methamphetamines, and drug paraphernalia were located. Kole Higgins, 23, of Scranton was arrested for driving while barred, possession with intent to deliver, gathering where controlled substances are used, unlawful possession of prescription medication, possession of methamphetamine, keeping premises or vehicle for controlled substances, failure to affix tax stamp, and possession of drug paraphernalia.* Justin Baker, 31, of Grand Junction was arrested for possession of a controlled substance- third or subsequent offense (two counts) and possession of drug paraphernalia.*

Wednesday, April 11: At 12 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff with locating evidence at the Adkins river access in Washington Township. At 1 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complain in the 300 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Tuesday, April 10:  At 10:41 am a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint in the 2400 block of 237th St in Junction Township.  At 9:58 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle at 257th St and Highway 4 south of Jefferson.

Monday, April 9: At 4:41 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-53 near T Ave west of Grand Junction. Rochelle Mitchels, 59, of Rippey lost control of her vehicle and entered the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 1:16 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson. Jessica Hoffmann, 41, of Glidden struck a dog running at large. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $750.

Sunday, April 8: At 109:24 am a deputy investigated a controlled bun on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 210th St in Bristol Township. At 1:30 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 4 near County Road E-26 (170th St) five miles north of Jefferson. Edgar Tegtmeier, 88, of Des Moines lost control of his 2002 Buick LeSabre and struck a utility pole. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $4,000. Damage to the utility pole was estimated at $1,500. At 4:24 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident on Quaker Ave at 243rd St in Grant Township. Crawford Petterson, 17, of Jefferson lost control of his 2005 Ford F150 pickup truck. Damage was estimated to exceed value.  At 5:49 pm a deputy investigated controlled substances that were found in a driveway in the 800 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 7:59 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident in the 1600 block of Highway 144 south of Grand Junction. Candice Ortiz, 30, of Grand Junction lost control of her 1989 Ford F150 pickup truck and struck a DOT snowplow. Ortiz was transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS. Damage to her pickup truck was estimated at $3,500. Driver of the snowplow was Jeffrey Ford, 57, of Jefferson. He was not injured. Damage to the snowplow was estimated at $25,000.

Saturday, April 7: At 11:58 am a deputy investigated a fire in the 1700 block of T Ave in Junction Township. The property owner was burning trees. At 1:01 pm a deputy assisted with a fire in the 400 block of Percival St in Rippey.  Hay bales were burning. The Rippey fire department extinguished the fire.  At 1:09 pm a deputy assisted with a controlled burn that got out of control in the 1000 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township. The Jefferson fire department responded and put out the fire. At 1:35 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 4:13 pm a deputy assisted with a controlled burn that went out of control on County Road E-19 (140th St) and F Ave in Cedar Township. The Churdan and Jefferson fire departments responded. At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 100 block of Connant St in Farlin. At 9:28 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 600 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Friday, April 6: At 1:00 pm the sheriff and a deputy arrested Shawn King, 27, of Grand Junction on Polk County warrants for a controlled substance violation and failure to affix a tax stamp.* At 6:38 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of Main St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, April 5: At 6:27 am the sheriff, deputies, Department of Narcotics Enforcement, and the ATF conducted a search warrant in the 700 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. Controlled substances were located. Travis Straight, 24, of Scranton was arrested for possession with intent to deliver and a tax stamp violation*. At 5:03 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded to a grass fire in the 1000 block of 17th St in Bristol Township.

Wednesday, April 4: At 1:26 pm a deputy assisted the Perry police department with a stolen bicycle in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 8:26 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-53 (235th Street) east of Parkland Ave east of Jefferson. Clayton Chapman, 38, of Boone struck a deer with a 2017 Chevrolet Express van, causing an estimated $7,000 in damage. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 4 near 210th St north of Jefferson. Barbara Gregg, 66, of Farnhamville struck a deer with her 2017 Chevrolet Impala. There was an estimated $8,000 damage to the vehicle.

Monday, April 2: At 11:30  a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of County Road E-63 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. At 7:34 pm a deputy investigated a vehicle theft in the 1100 block of H Ave in Kendrick Township. The vehicle was located inn Des Moines.

Sunday, April 1: At 3:25 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of Main St in Grand Junction. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a stop sign that was missing from County Road P-33 (120th St) and R Ave in Dawson Township.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
