Greene County district court, week ending March 29

In Greene County district court a judgment was entered March 23 against Craigg Michael Smith, 41, of Jefferson after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault- simple, amended from assault on person in certain occupation. Smith was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge. Court costs were $60. (Sentencing: Honorable Joseph B. McCarville)

Damon Tyson Bennewitz, 20, of Des Moines was ranted a deferred judgment after he changed his plea to guilty March 27 to a charge of operating while intoxicated- first offense. He was placed on informal probation for one year. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense, and he must complete a community college drinking drivers school. A judgment was entered for a $1,250 civil penalty. Court costs were $100. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Beth Lappegard, 23, of Perry was granted a deferred judgment March 29 after she changed her plea to guilty to a charge of possession of marijuana- first offense. She was placed on informal probation for one year. She must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense. She must pay a $315 civil penalty with a $125 LEI surcharge and a $10 surcharge for drug abuse resistance education (DARE). The court ruled she is unable to pay restitution for her court appointed attorney’s fees. Court costs were $373.80. A charge of possession of methamphetamine was dismissed. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Shawn J. Gifford, 27, of Jefferson was sentenced to one year in jail after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine. All but two days of the jail time was suspended. He must pay $48 per day in sheriff’s room and board fees for the time he serves. He must undergo a substance abuse evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at his own expense. His driver’s license was revoked for 180 days. Gifford was fined $315 with a $110.25 surcharge, a $125 LEI surcharge and a $10 DARE surcharge. He must pay $800 restitution for his court appointed attorney’s fees and $141 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Cindy Jo Sheehy, 57, of Grand Junction was sentenced to six months in jail after she pleaded guilty to a charge of dependent adult abuse/exploitation grater than $100. The jail term was suspended and she was placed on informal probation for one year. Sheehy must pay $100 restitution to the victim and $140 court costs. (Sentencing: McCarville)

Jody Lyn Schad, 42, of Jefferson was sentenced to two years in prison after he changed his plea to guilty to a charge of driving while license barred. The prison term was suspended and he was placed on informal probation for two years. He was fined $625 with a $218.75 surcharge; both were suspended. Persons pleaded not guilty at arraignments as follows: Travis Frederick Venteicher, 35, of Grand Junction, assault causing bodily injury or mental illness; Hiram Silvano Black Jr, 29, of Jefferson, possession of marijuana- first offense; Timothy Lowell Wilson, 48 of Fort Dodge, unlawful possession of prescription drug and possession of marijuana- second or subsequent offense; John Woodward Walker, 66, of Guthrie Center, OWI- first offense and possession of marijuana- first offense; Cole Jadon Eischeid, 19, of Carroll, possession of marijuana- first offense; Christian James Steburg, 48, of Jefferson domestic abuse assault impeding flow of air/blood; and Renae Jane Baugh, 36, of Jefferson, OWI- first offense. Trial dates were set for May 8 in every case.

Cases were initiated in district court as follows: Brandon Michael Sullivan, 22, of Ottumwa, driving while license barred; Joseph Alan Winch, 25, of Fort Dodge, driving while license barred; John Taylor Roberts, 19, of Scranton, possession of marijuana- first offense; Travis Michael Straight, 24, of Scranton, driving while license revoked; Joshuah Jay Blumberg, 22, of Farlin, driving while license barred; Shawn Allen Ellsbury, 49, of Jefferson, domestic abuse assault display or use weapon, and in a separate case, public intoxication- second offense; and Justin Anthony Leist, 32, of Jefferson, domestic abuse assault- second offense.

Information is available since the return of an arrest warrant that Isaiah Jerrell Roy Burt, 30, of Boone has been charged with unauthorized use of credit less than $1,000 (six counts). The warrant was issued Dec. 4, 2017 and returned March 26.
