Sheriff’s report – March 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Saturday, March 31: At 4:08 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle on County Road E-53 (237th St) near Jordan Ave in Jackson Township.

Friday, March 30: At 12:23 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with a search of a vehicle in the 800 block of S. Elm St. At 1:46 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with an arrest. At 9:42 am the chief deputy conducted tobacco compliance checks with no infractions. At 1:14 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of O Ave in Hardin Township. At 2:41 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 400 block of Madison St in Scranton. At 2:51 pm a deputy and the Paton fire department responded to a grass fire in the 300 block of Highway 144 (U Ave) in Paton Township. At 5:43 pm a deputy investigated a theft on 175th St near B Ave in Cedar Township. At 7:11 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle at the church in Cooper. At 8:36 pm a deputy investigated an attempted burglary in the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, March 29: At 7:03 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of Cedar St in Scranton. At 10:01 am a deputy investigated a backing accident in the 500 block of Main St in Paton. Chase Trenary, 20, of Fort Dodge backed into another vehicle with his 2009 Chevrolet Silverado causing no damage to his truck. The vehicle he backed into belonged to Phillip Kenoyer, 30, of Grand Junction. Kenoyer was parked in his 1996 Chevrolet truck that had an estimated $40 in damage. At 4:29 pm a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint in Cooper. At 6:43 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 1900 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 7:33 pm a deputy arrested Nathaniel Brown, 51, of Scranton for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated* on Jordan Ave near 237th St in Jackson Township.

Wednesday, March 28: At 4:59 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 5:23 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 240th St and County Road P-46 (W Ave) east of Grand Junction. Amanda Collogan, 33, of Grand Junction struck a cow that was in the roadway. Damage to Collogan’s 2009 Chevy Equinox was estimated at $1,500. At 11:29 am the sheriff investigated an assault in the 400 block of Madison St in Scranton. At 4:35 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 600 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction. At 6:03 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1800 block of County Road N-65 (A Ave) in Willow Township. At 6:19 pm a deputy assisted with an unruly inmate in the jail. At 9:04 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of someone shooting in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township.

Tuesday, March 27: At 9:24 am a deputy assisted an Iowa DOT officer with an arrest on Highway 30 at County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 12:43 pm a deputy investigated a 4-wheeler in the 900 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 4:46 pm a deputy investigated a fraud case in the 200 block of 1st St in Rippey. At 7:31 pm a deputy investigated an animal neglect complaint in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Monday, March 26: At 8:09 am a deputy investigated metal objects sticking up from the rail road crossing at County Road P-33 (S Ave). At 4:16 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on X Avenue near 185th St in Paton Township. Hector Castaneda, 18, of Perry lost control of his 2006 Hyndai Sonata, causing an estimated $4,000 in damage. He was cited for failure to maintain control. At 5:04 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 5:21 pm a deputy tried to locate a missing dog in the 500 block of 320th St in Willow Township.

Sunday, March 25: At 1:30 am a deputy investigated violation of a no contact order in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton. At 3:37 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest on Highway 30 near Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. At 1:21 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 900 block of 11th St in Grand Junction. At 5:40 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad tracks on 16th St in Grand Junction. At 7:39 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson PD officer with an arrest in the 200 block of W. Central Ave. At 10:47 pm a deputy investigated a no contact order violation in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Saturday, March 24: At 8:43 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 9:44 am a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Y Ave near the 144 diagonal in Washington Township. At 1:43 am a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. At 2:11 pm a deputy investigated an IRS scam in the 1000 block of Grant St in Scranton. At 9;03 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an unruly subject at Greene County Medical Center.

Friday, March 23: At 2:09 am a deputy and the sheriff assisted the Jefferson PD with an unruly subject at Greene County Medical Center. At 11:03 am the sheriff investigated a 110-lbs cylinder that was found in the ditch of K Ave just north of 190th St in Bristol Township. The tank was full of anhydrous. The tank was emptied and disposed of. At 3:13 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 700 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 4:08 pm a deputy investigated an identity theft in the 600 block of 4th St in Rippey. At 7:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint on County Road E-53 ( 230th St) and County Road P-33 (S Ave)  in Junction Township. At 10:51 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault complaint in the 400 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Thursday, March 22: At 4:12 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of identity theft in the 1000 block of Maple St in Scranton. At 5:24 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, March 21: At  1:54 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest in the 200 block of W. Clark St. At 10 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 700 block of Eagle St in Scranton. At 10:37k am the sheriff and an Iowa State Patrol trooper investigated a male subject in Scranton looking in windows. Shawn Gifford, 27, of Jefferson was located and arrested on two warrants for failure to appear.* At 12;47 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 300 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, March 20: At 7:06 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Main St in Scranton and arrested Travis Straight, 24, of Scranton for driving while license revoked.* He was also cited failure to prove security against liability.

Monday, March 19: At 8:41 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 200 block of W. Paton St in Paton. At 5:05 pm a deputy assisted with a grass fire in the 1200 block of 1st St in Rippey. The Grand Junction and Rippey fire departments responded to the fire. The grass fire was caused by a burn pile that spread to the grass. At 11:27 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest on Highway 4 near 257th St south of Jefferson.

Sunday, March 18: At 2:45 pm a deputy investigated dirt bikes being ridden in the 1000 block of Stanton St in Scranton. At 7:43 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 1100 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Saturday, March 17: At 2:26 am a deputy investigated an unoccupied vehicle in the ditch on County Road E-18 (130th St) near County P-33 (S Ave) in Paton Township. At 3:08 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a fight at Wild Rose Casino.

Friday, March 16: At 10:35 am a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 25 near 310th St in Willow Township. Kyle Chalfant, 22, of Guthrie Center was operating at tractor with a grain cart. A vehicle coming from the south heading north came into his lane and he entered the ditch. There was little damage to the tractor and wagon. The second vehicle left the scene. Chalfant stated that he took the ditch to avoid a head on collision. At 12:05 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 5:03 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle in the ditch on the 144 diagonal near V Ave in Washington Township. Janice Johnston, 62, of Rippey lost control of her 2015 Ford Taurus on the snow and went into the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 5:15 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover on 210th St near C Ave in Kendrick Township. Harold Everman, 71, of Jefferson lost control of his 1998 Jeep Cherokee. on the snow-covered roadway. The vehicle went into the ditch and rolled onto its top. The vehicle was estimated to be a total loss Greene County EMS and Scranton Fire responded to the scene. There were no injuries. At 5:18 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover on County Road P-46 (W Ave) near 260th St in Washington Township. Marjory Krueger, 36, of Jefferson lost control of her 2006 Mountaineer and rolled into the north bound ditch. The vehicle was totaled. There were no injuries. At 5:34 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle in the ditch on County Road E-18 (130th St) near Q Ave in Paton Township. Kelsey Hatfield, 26, of Paton lost control of her 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix and went into the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 9:58 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover on County Road E-18 and County Road P-29 (N Avenue) in Dawson Township. Caitlin Peterson, 29, of Fort Dodge lost control of her 2002 Chrysler Town and County van and rolled it onto its side. The vehicle was totaled. There were no injuries. Greene County Emergency Medical Services, Churdan Fire, and Jefferson Fire responded to the scene.

Thursday, March 15: At 2:45 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 700 block of Grant St in Scranton.

Tuesday, March 13: At 12:01 am a deputy investigated a noise complaint in the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:53 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1700 block of County Road E-53 (235th St) in Grant Township.

Monday, March 12: At 6:54 pm a deputy investigated an aggressive dog in the 900 block of N. 11th St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, March 11: At 12:14 am a deputy assisted with an unruly inmate in the booking area of the jail. Amanda Goodpaster, 30, of Grand Junction was arrested for public intoxication, assault on persons in certain occupations (three counts) and disorderly conduct*. At 11:57 am a deputy investigated a missing dog in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, March 10: At 10:07 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Sparky’s in Jefferson. At 10:34 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 at P Ave east of Jefferson. Steven Ray,47, of Boone struck a dog running at large, causing $2,400 in damage to his 2015 GMC Terrain. At 10;42 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1700 block of 222nd St in Grant Township.

Friday, March 9: At 9:02 am a deputy and the sheriff assisted with a medical call in the 100 block of Vine St in Cooper. At 10:38 am a deputy investigated three stray dogs that had attacked a vehicle and left bite marks in the fender and also damaged the bumper in the 600 block of M Ave in Highland Township. At 1:12 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 500 block of 16th St N. in Grand Junction.

Thursday, March 8: At 12:13 pm a deputy and the sheriff investigated a possible burglary in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 5:24 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of N. College St in Paton. At 5:49 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 900 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Wednesday, March 7: Routine activity reported.

Tuesday, March 6: At 8:51 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident in the 1800 block of Highway 25 in Scranton Township. Madison Strum, 20, of Glidden lost control of her 2008 Chevrolet Malibu and struck a driveway embankment across the ditch. She was not injured. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $3,000. At 10:45 am a deputy provided traffic control for a semi- tractor trailer stuck in a driveway in the 1500 block of County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township. At 6:14 pm  a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 200 block of Main St in Paton.

Monday, March 5: At 7:08 am a deputy found a broken RR crossing arm at 230th St and D Ave in Scranton Township. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 8:55 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Friday, March 2: At 6:26 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a counterfeit $100 bill at Sparky’s in Jefferson. At 5:24 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 600 block of 4th St in Rippey. At 7:40 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer acceding on County Road E-26 (170th St) near County Road P-33 (S Ave) in Hardin Township. Carleigh Paup, 19, of Churdan struck a deer. Damage to her 2012 Chevrolet Malibu was estimated at $3,000.  At 9;34 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 4 near County Road E-63 (330th St) in Franklin Township. Christy Laabs, 38, of Yale struck a deer, causing an estimated $10,000 damage to her 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe.

Thursday, March 1: At 4:47 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:30 am a deputy investigated an identity theft in the 700 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 6:11 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department in the 100 block of N. Grimmell Rd with a subject who was concerned about an encyclopedia having the word “bomb” in it. At 7:37 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 200 block of Paton St in Paton.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
