Peeps arrive at Greene Co HS

Animal science students at Greene County High School received peeps on Valentine’s Day but they weren’t the sweet, chewy candy Peeps. They were peeping peeps – chicks!

A year ago Animal science students presented a proposal to the board of education for an authentic experience raising chicks. The board approved, but the city of Jefferson also had to approve it because chickens aren’t allowed in the city limits.

The “t”s were crossed and the “I”s were dotted and a shipment of 70 broiler chicks arrived Feb. 14. Students will care for them, watching their health, nutrition and living conditions for the next several weeks, according to vocational agriculture teacher Katie Akers. At the end of the poultry lab experience they’ll be processed by Valley View Poultry in Bloomfield and state-inspected for resale.

During a recent class period the high school students took time to show the chicks to preschoolers in the Little Ram Preschool, which is lead by high school teacher Vicki Gustafson and students in the child development class.
