Medical center hosts lunch-n-learn about sleep

Dr James C. Meyer

“A Good Night’s Sleep” is the topic of a community lunch-n-learn event Monday, March 12, from 12 to 1 pm at Greene County Medical Center’s education classroom. A sack lunch will be provided for those who RSVP.

Dr James Meyer will discuss obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is the result of muscle relaxation in the back of the throat, which causes the airway to narrow and the throat to close during sleeping.

For those experiencing sleep apnea, the brain signals them to wake up to reopen the airway, resulting in choking, snorting and gasping for air throughout sleep. The constant interruption during the night results in feeling drowsy during the waking hours. Sleep apnea can be caused by weight, age, gender, genetics, smoking, and medication or alcohol use.

Meyer is affiliated with UnityPoint Clinic – Pulmonology in Fort Dodge. He holds clinic hours at Greene County Medical Center on the second Monday of every month.

Persons who want more information about the lunch-n-learn or to RSVP can call the medical center’s Care Management office at 515-386-0469.
