Sheriff’s report – February 2018

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, Feb. 28: At 12:32 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 400 block of E. Paton St. in Paton.Tuesday, Feb. 27: At 9:37 am a deputy investigated a IRS telephone scam in the 1100 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. The sheriff’s office had about 10 calls about this scam, and several deputies received the same call demanding money or the caller would come and arrest or seize property. At 2:27 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest at Wild Rose Casino. John Martinez, 23, of Deloit was arrested for a Calhoun County arrest warrant. During the arrest the deputy discovered drug paraphernalia and suspected controlled substances on his person. Randa Pederson, 20, of Lake City was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia.*

Saturday, Feb 24: At 4:33 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1100 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township.

Friday, Feb. 23: At 1:42 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle in a ditch on County Road E-53 (240th St) near County Road P-33 (S Ave) in Junction Township. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 8:46 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in Grand Junction. At 4:16 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of M Ave in Bristol township. At 6:31 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 900 block of Irving St in Scranton.

Thursday, Feb. 22: At 7:29 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road P-46 (X Ave) near 140th St in Paton Township. Vicki Mitchell, 76, of Perry lost control of her 2010 Ford Escape and went into the ditch and struck a fence. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $300. At 3:52 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1100 block of R Ave in Hardin Township. At 5:05 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and Count Road P-46 (W Ave). Deborah Stensland, 56, of Perry was traveling on P-46 (direction not provided) and failed to stop as posted at Highway 30. She pulled in front of Samantha Garcia, 28, of Des Moines, who was traveling on Highway 30 (direction not provided). Garcia struck the rear of Stensland’s 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There were no injuries. Stensland was cited for failure to stop. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $2,500. Damage to Garcia’s 2003 Honda Odyssey was estimated at $2,000. At 9:56 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident on County Road E-53 (237th St) and Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township. Luke Nelson, 20, of Jefferson lost control of his 1998 Ford F150 and went into the west ditch. Jacie Hawthorne, 20, of Scranton was driving a 2001 Ford Escort and observed Nelson lose control. She applied her brakes and also lost control of her vehicle. Hawthorne’s 2001 Ford Escort struck Nelson’s 1998 Ford F150. Damage to Hawthorne’s vehicle was estimated at $3,500. There were no injuries and no citations were issued.

Wednesday, Feb. 21: At 9’16 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on County Road E-53 (230th St) at County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. At 9;26 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic abuse call. At 11:25 pm a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on 240th St and B Ave in Scranton Township.

Tuesday, Feb. 20: At 2:25 pm a deputy picked up a dog running at large on Highway 4 just south of 170th St in Dawson Township. The dog was taken to PAWS. At 5:14 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up on Highway 30 near R Ave west of Grand Junction. At 5:48 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 and Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. At 9:40 pm a deputy investigated a truck in the ditch in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township.

Monday, Feb. 19: At 11:05 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 2:08 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on County Road E-26 (160th St) near Highway 4 in Dawson Township. At 5:50 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on County Road E-57 (290th St) near Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 7:23 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in the 200 block of Adaza St in Adaza.

Sunday, Feb. 18: At 12:47 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 400 block of 8th St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Feb. 17: At 9:43 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 1500 block of 120th St in Dawson Township. Jacob Day, 27, of Paton was arrested for assault.* At 11:16 am a deputy assisted the Secret Service and the FBI with threats to the president and comments on the Florida school shooting in the 200 block of Adaza Street in Adaza. At 4:34 pm Paul Nelson, 43, of Jefferson was booked into the jail for a disorderly conduct arrest warrant out of Humboldt County.* At 10:50 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault in the 900 block of W. Lincoln Way.

Friday, Feb. 16: At 4:46 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a 911 hang up at Wild Rose Casino. At 5:45 pm a deputy investigated a burglary alarm in the 1400 block of Westwood Dr in Jefferson. At 6:51 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of 150th St in Cedar Township. At 9:08 pm a deputy investigated a two-vehicle accident in the Casey’s parking lot in Grand Junction. Kelcey Boddicker, 22, of Grinnell backed her 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche into a parked 2015 Ford Edge, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage to the Edge. Boddicker’s vehicle was not damaged. The owner of the parked vehicle was not named. At 10:04 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:14 pm a deputy arrested Dillon Sage, 26, of Grand Junction on a Polk County arrest warrant for violation of a protective order*.

Thursday, Feb. 15: At 3:10 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1100 block of 330th St in Willow Township. At 5:02 pm a deputy investigated suspected controlled substances found in the 500 block of S. 12th St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 14: At 10:10 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with trying to locate a subject in Grand Junction. At 11:48 am a deputy investigated bad checks written at the Paton Pit Stop. At 4:31 pm a deputy investigated possible stolen property in the Churdan area. At 7:03 pm a deputy investigated criminal mischief to a mailbox in the 200 block of Main St in Scranton.

Tuesday, Feb. 13: At 2:28 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of Adrian St in Churdan.

Monday, Feb. 12: At 10:13 am a deputy assisted the Department of Human Services with an investigation. At 1:22 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 700 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 6:42 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 30 near Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. At 10:25 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 144 near 275th St in Junction Township.

Sunday, Feb. 11: At 5:10 am a deputy assisted a motorist that was stuck in a snow drift in the 2000 block of 305th St in Washington Township. At 10:59 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 25 near County Road E-57 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. At 3 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a search warrant in the 700 block of Rose Lane. At 10:52 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 900 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Saturday, Feb. 10: At 4:35 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a theft in the 800 block of W. Lincoln Way in Jefferson.

Friday, Feb. 9: At 4:55 pm a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch with no damage and no driver around. The vehicle was located on County Road E-53 (240th St) near F Ave in Scranton Township. The vehicle was removed. At 9:52 pm a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint in the 700 block of Main St in Grand Junction. At 9:54 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 700 block of Walnut St in Scranton. At 11:10 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 25 near 225th St north of Scranton.

Thursday, Feb. 8: At 12:36 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle accident on N. Elm St at Central Ave. At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Feb. 7: At 4:46 am a deputy investigated a semi-tractor trailer that was in the ditch on Highway 30 near C Ave west of Scranton. Robert Fineran, 61, of Ida Grove lost control of his 2004 Kenworth and trailer and went partially into the ditch and was still blocking one lane of the highway. There was no damage to semi or trailer and no injuries. At 5:50 am a second accident occurred at the scene. Allyn Case, 30, of Jefferson had been stopped by a deputy performing traffic control. Michael Birmingham, 21, of Boone lost control of the 1996 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer he was driving and struck Cases’s 1996 Buick Regal. Birmingham kept going and struck a Ryder truck driven by Dillon Pfab, 40, of Lisbon before entering the ditch. There were no injuries. Birmingham was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to his semi-tractor was estimated at $5,000. Damage to Case’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000 and damage to the Ryder truck was estimated at $4,000. At 12:58 pm the sheriff and a deputy investigated a fight in the jail. Jesus Zuniga, 18, and Dray Rivera, 27, both of Jefferson, were charged with disorderly conduct*. Zachery Waters, 19, of Paton was charged with interference with official acts.* At 2:54 pm the sheriff and deputies conducted a search warrant in the 800 block of Hager St in Grand Junction. Suspected drug paraphernalia was located. Charges are pending lab results. At 4:32 pm the sheriff investigated a single-vehicle accident on County Road E-53 (235th St) near the “S curve west of County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction. Kara Schroeder, 19, of Jefferson lost control of her 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix and struck the concrete center of the west side of the bridge and also the guard rail. The vehicle was totaled. Damage to the guard rail was estimated at $3,500. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle on R Ave just north of E-53 in Junction Township. At 8:30 pm two deputies conducted search warrants for stolen property in Woodbury County.

Tuesday, Feb. 6: At 5:58 pm a deputy investigated a report of a mountain lion in the 1900 block of 190th St in Junction Township. At 10:08 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse assault in the 500 block of T Ave in Paton Township. Arrest warrants have been requested for Shane Jewitt of Paton.

Monday, Feb. 5: At 9:53 am the sheriff, and two deputies, Jefferson fire, Grand Junction fire, Paton fire, Iowa State Patrol, Region 5 Hazmat, and Greene County EMS responded to a three-vehicle accident on Highway 30 and County Road P-33 (S Ave). The driver of a semi hauling pigs southbound on P-33 failed to stop and struck a semi hauling 8,200 gallons of diesel fuel in the center of the fuel tank, causing it to catch fire. The fuel trailer detached from the semi and struck a pickup truck. Two of the drivers were taken to the Greene County Medical Center, one with minor injuries and one with life threatening injuries. The third driver was uninjured. The Iowa State Patrol is conducting the investigation. At 10:24 pm two deputies, Jefferson fire, and Greene County EMS responded to a three-vehicle accident in the 2200 block of Highway 4 in Franklin Township. A semi that was hauling hogs lost control and struck another semi hauling anhydrous. After the first impact the truck hauling anhydrous struck an Iowa DOT snowplow. The accident is still under investigation. At 11:29 am a deputy responded to a car in the ditch with no damage and no injuries on County Road P-29 (N Ave) and County Road E-18 (130th St) in Dawson Township. At 1:43 pm a deputy responded to a three-vehicle accident on Highway 4 and 150th St in Dawson Township. Two of the vehicles were in the center of the lane. One of them tried to swerve, causing the vehicle to go sideways, causing the other vehicle to strike the second vehicle in the center of the vehicle. A third vehicle went into the ditch to avoid the other. There was one person with minor injuries taken to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS. At 3:20 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the 1200 block of Highway 30 west of Jefferson. At 3:22 pm a deputy assisted a motorist in the ditch on Highway 4 just south of the Calhoun County line in Highland Township. At 4:47 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover in the 800 block of County Road E-53 (240th St) in Jackson Township. A 2002 Saturn was found in the ditch unoccupied. The vehicle was totaled.

Sunday, Feb. 4: At 2:59 am A deputy assisted with a medical call in Grand Junction. At 9:41 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 400 block of H Ave in DawsonTownship.

Saturday, Feb. 3: At 1:56 am a deputy assisted a resident locked out of her home in Grand Junction. At 6:13 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with locating a water main break on Central Ave at N. Cedar St.

Friday, Feb. 2: At 2:13 pm a deputy responded to Scranton for a driving complaint.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
