Sheriff’s report – December 2017

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Sunday, Dec. 31: At 12:18 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 330th St in Franklin Township. Benjamin Barron, 39, of Jefferson lost control of his 2008 Chevrolet Malibu and went into the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 6:09 am a deputy investigated a suspicious bag in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction. At 8:59 am a deputy assisted a motorist on Highway 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction. At 9:33 am a deputy assisted a motorist on Highway 30 near Highway 144 at Grand Junction. At 7:28 pm a deputy assisted a motorist on U Ave near X Ave in Washington Township. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Saturday, Dec. 30: At 3:41 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Main St in Scranton. Trae Frohlich, 25, of Carroll lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Sierra truck and struck a building at 1016 Main St. Damage to the building was estimated at $7,000. Damage to Frolich’s pickup truck was estimated at $2,000.

Friday, Dec. 29: At 12:50 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 30 near Granite Ave east of Scranton. Joshua Lawson, 40, of Jefferson was eastbound on Highway 30. A westbound semi tractor-trailer blew up snow and Lawson could not see. He swerved and went into the ditch, hitting a culvert. There were no injuries. Damage to Lawson’s 2006 Chrysler 300 was estimated at $9,500. At 3:19 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop with the Jefferson PD at N. Grimmell Rd and W. Central Ave. Jesus Zuniga, 18, and Justin Lopez, 19, both of Jefferson were arrested for a controlled substance violation.* At 8:06 pm a deputy investigated violation of a protective order in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Thursday, Dec. 28: At 12:54 am deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 2000 block of 190th St in Junction Township. During the afternoon and evening tobacco compliance checks were done at all stores in the county that sell tobacco products. Cashiers at the Paton Pit Stop and Casey’s General Store (E. Lincoln Way, Jefferson) sold tobacco to a minor and were cited for the violation. At 11:59 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Wednesday, Dec. 27: At 12:38 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 1:34 am a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 7:51 pm a deputy arrested Derek Ott, 36, of Jefferson for possession of a firearm as a felon, theft- second degree, burglary- third degree, and ongoing criminal conduct*. At 9:28 pm a deputy investigated a car in the ditch on Highway 30 near Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. The driver lost control of the 2006 Ford 500. There was no damage to the vehicle.

Tuesday, Dec. 26: At 6:45 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person on Highway 30 near Mulberry Ave west of Jefferson. At 7:42 pm the sheriff and deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at Highway 144 in Grand Junction. Jonathan Kersey, 18, of Grand Junction was westbound on Highway 30 and turned in front of Rodney Blackmon, 22, also of Grand Junction. Their vehicles struck head on. Blackmon and Stephen Molle, 21, of Jamaica, a passenger in Blackmon’s vehicle, were transported to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Emergency Medical Services. They were transported by helicopter to medical centers in Des Moines and Iowa City with non life-threatening injuries. Kersey sustained minor injuries and was taken to the medical center by relatives. Drug paraphernalia and suspected marijuana wax were found in Blackmon’s vehicle. There are charges pending. Kersey was cited for failure to yield the right of way. His 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck and Blackmon’s 2004 Chevrolet Impala sustained damage exceeding value. Grand Junction fire and the Iowa State Patrol assisted with the accident. At 10:35 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Dec. 25: At 1:56 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person on Highway 144 one mile south of Grand Junction. At 8:46 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Jordan Ave just north of 235th St in Scranton  Township. Chanze Bushman, 16, of Scranton lost control of the 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix he was driving, entered the ditch and struck a tree. The vehicle was a total loss. Bushman was cited for failure to maintain control.

Sunday, Dec. 24: At 10:52 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on County Road E-53 near the sawmill east of Jefferson. Thomas Kennedy, 49, of Jefferson lost control of his 2001 Chevrolet Prism and entered the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle.

Saturday, Dec. 23: At 2:11 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop in the 300 block of W. Central Ave. At 10:08 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an accident on Highway 30 near M Ave. At 10:55 am a deputy investigated several 911 calls from a residence in the 300 block of S. Pinet St in Jefferson. At 8:15 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1000 block of Sand St in Churdan.

Friday, Dec. 22: At 1 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1500 block of 290th St in Franklin Township. At 4:01 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 1600 block of 290th St in Franklin Township. At 8:27 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2000 block of 190th St in Hardin Township.

Thursday, Dec. 21: At 5:21 am officers were performing a traffic stop in the 300 block of N. Elm St when a southbound vehicle passed them at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not stop or slow down at the posted stop signs at Elm and Lincoln Way. The officer pursued the southbound vehicle. A Greene County deputy was south of Jefferson on Highway 4 when the call came out. The deputy was able to stop the vehicle after locking the radar at 91 mph. The vehicle stopped at 265th St. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Shane Christopher Jewett, 49, of Paton for operating while intoxicated- first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. He was also cited for speed and failure to obey a stop sign. At 11:58 am a complainant reported being the victim of a domestic assault at a residence in the 300 block of N. Chestnut St. The officer is investigating.

Thursday, Dec. 21: At 5:21 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a car chase that ended on Highway 4 at 265th St south of Jefferson.

Wednesday, Dec. 20: At 9:38 am a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the Paton-Churdan School parking lot in Churdan. At 12:54 pm a deputy tried to locate a dog running at large in the 700 block of W. Main St in Grand Junction. At 2:39 pm a deputy arrested Jose Hernandez, 28, of Grand Junction for driving while barred*. At 9:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 600 block of 12th St in Grand Junction. At 11:09 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on Highway 4 near 310th St in Franklin Township. Mark Nelson, 54, of Jefferson struck a deer with his 2006 Ford F150. There was minor damage to the vehicle.

Tuesday, Dec. 19: At 1 pm a deputy and Jefferson fire department responded to a ditch fire at I Ave and 270th St in Greenbrier Township. At 3:15 pm a deputy investigated a sex offender registry violation in the 2400 block of U Ave in Washington Township. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on County Road E-26 (170th St) near Q Ave. Brent Ferguson, 59, of Farnhamville struck a deer with his 2009 Honda Accord. The vehicle was totaled in the accident. At 10:09 pm a deputy removed a dead deer from the roadway on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near County Road E-26.

Monday, Dec. 18: At 9:17 am a deputy investigated two missing juveniles from the 200 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:04 am a deputy investigated illegal dumping at McMahon Access in Jackson Township.

Saturday, Dec. 16: At 1:16 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of illegal hunting in the 1900 block of Q Ave in Franklin Township. At 1:41 pm a deputy investigated a fire in the 2200 block of U Ave in Washington Township. At 5:35 pm a deputy investigated a ditch fire on D Ave just south of Highway 30 in Scranton Township that was found to be a controlled burn. At 5:49 pm ma deputy investigated a theft in the 1800 block of 305th St in Washington Township. At 6:45 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of 3rd St in Rippey. Johnathan Mills, 34, of Rippey was arrested for assault*.

Friday, Dec. 15: At 8:56 am a deputy put cattle back in the fence in the area of 170th St and County Road N-58 (A Ave).

Thursday, Dec. 14: At 6:20 pm a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle on Highway 144 and County Road E-53 (230th St) at Grand Junction. At 7:07 pm a deputy investigated lights on in vacated school in Grand Junction. At 9:45 pm a deputy arrested Kari Overholser in Rippey on Boone County arrest warrants.

Wednesday, Dec. 13: At 12:07 am a deputy was called to the Carroll County line on Highway 30. Carroll County deputies were involved in a chase that ended before it got to Greene County. At 9 am a deputy investigated a forgery and theft in the 1800 block of 115th St in Dawson Township. At 4:44 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle on C Ave at 190th St in Kendrick Township. At 6:36 pm a deputy investigated a domestic abuse in the 600 block of County Road P-14 (S Ave) in Dawson Township.

Tuesday, Dec. 12: At 1:36 pm a deputy investigated drug paraphernalia that was found at the Lion’s Club Tree Park in Grand Junction. At 1:53 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:57 pm a deputy investigated domestic abuse in the 1000 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction.

Monday, Dec. 11: At 7:27 am a deputy investigated a utility pole burning in the 1100 block of 244th St in Jackson Township. Jefferson fire responded and extinguished the fire. The fire was caused by a controlled burn the previous day. At 9:43 am a deputy investigated a burglary near the co-op in Churdan. At 1 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, Dec. 10: At 1:12 pm a deputy investigated the theft of a semi and trailer in the 1800 block of 115th St in Paton Township.

Saturday, Dec. 9: At 1:29 am a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 9:25 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on X Ave near 210th St in Junction Township. Victoria Conoan, 25, of Prairie City drover her 2008 Toyota Prius into the ditch. There was no damage to the car.

Friday, Dec. 8: At 10:37 am a deputy responded to a controlled burn that got out of control in the 300 block of 120th St in Cedar Township. A ditch fire got out of control and burned a corn head and field cultivator. Churdan fire and Lohrville fire responded and extinguished the fire. At 6:59 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.

Thursday, Dec. 7: At 2:42 am a deputy conducted a traffic stop on E. Main St at 14th St in Grand Junction and arrested Dewayne Phipps, 30, of Grand Junction for driving while barred*. At 9:01 pm a deputy arrested Douglas Shutt, 56, of Grand Junction on arrest warrants for possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to affix tax stamp, possession of methamphetamine- second offense (three counts), possession of marijuana- second offense and unlawful possession of prescription drugs*.

Wednesday, Dec. 6: At 2:57 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 4 near 160th St in Dawson Township. Kendra Smith, 18, of Somers was northbound on Highway 4 and lost control of her 1994 Chevrolet Suburban and entered the west ditch. The vehicle rolled. Damage to it exceeded value. At 5:41 pm a deputy tried to locate a cow running loose on County Road N-58 (A Ave) near 170th St in Kendrick Township. At 8:20 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1100 block of Highway 4 in Highland Township.

Tuesday, Dec. 5: At 12:34 am a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 1800 block of Highway 4 north of Jefferson. Charles Wolf, 43, of Jefferson was arrested for domestic abuse assault.* At 6:16 am a deputy investigated a low hanging powerline in the 1200 block of Highway 4 in Dawson Township. At 6:52 am the Greene County and Carroll County sheriff’s offices conducted a search warrant at a residence in the 900 block of Main St in Scranton. Marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized. Charges are pending lab results. At 9:11 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1900 block of 295th St in Washington Township. At 6:20 pm a deputy and a Iowa State Patrolman investigated a rollover accident. The Iowa State Patrol covered the accident on 330th Street and D Ave in Willow Township.

Monday, Dec. 4: At 2:18 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 2200 block of 295th St in Washington Township. At 3:35 am a deputy investigated a car-cow accident in the 1800 block of County Road E-53 (235th St) west of Grand Junction. The driver of the car left the scene before the deputy arrived. At 8:04 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 235th St near Jordan Ave in Scranton Township. A 15-year-old male lost control of his 2003 Ford F150 pickup truck. The driver was cited for failure to maintain control. The vehicle was totaled.

Sunday, Dec. 3: At 10:23 am a deputy investigated a missing cow in the 100 block of 330th St in Willow Township. At 12:28 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a traffic stop in the 700 block of W. Wall St. At 12:38 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1700 block of 170th St of Hardin Township. At 2:21 pm a deputy investigated an attempted burglary in the 100 block of 240th St in Scranton Township. At 2:58 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of Hager St in Grand Junction. At 4:14 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 400 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 9:25 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an assault in the 500 block of West Lincoln Way.

Saturday, Dec. 2: At 9:10 pm a deputy found a power pole that was arcing on Highway 25 near 270th St in Scranton Township. At 10:27 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Friday, Dec. 1: At 10:35 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 800 block of Jay St in Churdan. At 2:10 pm a deputy tried to locate a 4-wheeler that had wrecked on 140th St near P Ave in Dawson Township. At 4:51 pm a deputy and the sheriff assisted a semi that had lost 15 round stock bales on the roadway at 190th and N Ave north of Jefferson.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
