Winners told in fifth grade essay contest

A trio of fifth graders were honored Dec. 21 as winners in American Legion Post 11’s essay contest. The topic of the annual contest is “What the Flag Means to Me.” The winners were announced Dec. 21 in front of the entire class.

Addison Walker wrote the first place essay and received $50. She will be invited to read her essay at the Memorial Day observance in the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery next May. Alyssa Gerdes placed second and received $25, and Danica Goff-Hueser placed third and received $10.

Fifth grade language arts teacher Kim Braun was also recognized with a certificate of appreciation “of outstanding service and assistance which contributed to the advancement of the American Legion programs and activities dedicated to God and country.”
