Greene Co school board okays eight early retirements

A group of seven veteran teachers and a cafeteria employee are leaving the ranks at the end of the school year.

The Greene County board of education at its Dec. 20 meeting approved the voluntary (early) retirement requests of elementary teachers Susan Turner, Annette Meier and Diane Wallace, middle school teacher Tom Braun, high school teachers Dave Destival, Beth Vanderwilt and Donna Carhill, and elementary food service staff Sandy Baugh.

The board had set $200,000 as the maximum total incentives for the voluntary requirement program. The district will pay $184,340 in cash incentives to the employees and another $14,102 in FICA for a total of $198,442.

The retiring teachers are at or near the top of the pay scale. They’ll be replaced by less experienced teachers at a cost savings to the district. The district also has the option not to replace them, reducing staff by attrition.

The incentive payments come from the district’s management fund, not the general fund.
