Northeast Greene County likely to sprout more wind turbines

The number of wind turbines in Greene County may more than double in 2018 if another wind project proposed by MidAmerican Energy is approved.

County zoning coordinator Chuck Wenthold reported Monday that he has received payment from MidAmerican for conditional use permits for 93 wind turbine sites. The permits cost $150 each. MidAmerican plans to build turbines on 85 sites; the additional sites are in case some of the sites prove not to be viable.

The sites are located in Dawson, Paton, Hardin and Junction townships in an area bordered by 120th St on the north, Q Ave on the west, 215th St on the south, and Y Ave (the county line) on the east.

Letters have been sent to all landowners involved and the board of adjustment. Wenthold said the board of adjustment will hold a public hearing on the use permits in December.

If the project is approved, MidAmerican plans to begin construction in April.

As of Tuesday, Nov. 28, 13 wind turbines of the MidAmerican’s Beaver Creek Wind Park are online. Construction of all the turbines is complete.
