County moving toward new mental health region

The Greene County supervisors on Monday approved a letter to the Central Iowa Community Services (CICS) region notifying that board of Greene County’s desire to join.

A formal application that includes financial information is also required. Greene County will continue to pay its share of expenses to the Heart of Iowa Community Service (HICS) region until the change becomes effective July 1.

Other counties in the CICS region are Boone, Franklin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Madison, Marshall, Poweshiek, Story and Warren.

Dallas, Audubon, Guthrie and Greene counties comprise the HICS region. At least three counties are required for a region.

The supervisors also approved $5,000 from their discretionary Louis Dreyfus fund for a housing project Region XII Council of Governments is undertaking in Jefferson. The money will be used for demolition and asbestos removal of a dilapidated house at 606 N. Cedar St.

Karla Janning of Region XII said she had asked the secondary roads department to help with the demolition as in-kind participation in the project. County engineer Wade Weiss has noted on other occasions that the secondary roads department has been spread thin taking on jobs that don’t have anything to do with roads. He suggested to Janning a request for Dreyfus funds rather than an in-kind donation.

In other business relating to secondary roads, the supervisors approved resolutions hiring Brad Ebersole, Alex Gettler and Steven Springer as large equipment operators. They will start at an hourly wage of $20.31. All three have large equipment experience.

Jobs in the secondary roads department are highly sought after, with more than 40 persons applying for the three vacant positions.
