Teachers sharpen skills in teaching reading

Greene County Schools reading specialist Julie Neal was among the presenters at the Iowa Reading Association annual summer conference June 27-28 in Ames. Her topic was reading data procedures for grades K-12.

Staff members Connie Hoffman, Kathy Dobney, Jenny Fisher, Michelle Wilkening, Maigan Haley, Stormy Fish and Annette Coil also attended the conference. The theme was “Dive Into Reading.”

Workshops covered literacy topics such as Common Core, writing, vocabulary, comprehension, reading in content areas, and technology. Staff also attended various small group sessions and participated in leadership activities that will enhance their classroom instruction in the coming school year.

Some had the opportunity to have lunch with Steven Layne, author of “In Defense of Read Alouds.” Teachers did a book study of that book during the winter.
