Sheriff’s report – June 2017

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Friday, June 30: At 8:52 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 900 block of Cedar St in Scranton. At 9:23 am a deputy investigated a support cable for a power pole that was struck in the 600 block of Jefferson St in Scranton. At 1:54 pm a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a stolen vehicle. At 5:38 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of South 11th St in Grand Junction. At 7:48 pm a deputy arrested Rodney Reed, 53, of Grand Junction for an arrest warrant for harassment*.

Thursday, June 29: At 1:40 am a deputy assisted the Perry PD with locating a person in the 2000 block of 295th St in Washington Township. At 5:32 am a deputy picked up an abandoned bicycle on County Road E-53 (235th St) and Quint Ave in Grant Township. At 1:36 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up on the bike trail south of Jefferson. At 2:01 pm a deputy arrested Lawrence O’Neal, 42, of Grand Junction for driving while barred*. At 2:42 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint on Highway 30 and Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson.

Wednesday, June 28: At 6:15 am a deputy investigated a car deer accident on Highway 4 at 330th St. James Barnett, 68, of Jefferson was southbound and struck a deer in the roadway. Damage to his 2007 Toyota Tundra was estimated at $5,000. At 7:24 pm a deputy arrested Carly Knowles, 20, of Churdan on a Webster County arrest warrant and turned custody of her over to the Webster County sheriff’s office. At 10:40 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a protective order in the 2400 block of 180th St in Junction Township.

Tuesday, June 27: At 8:34 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 2200 block of D Ave in Willow Township. At 2:22 pm a deputy investigated bank fraud in the 900 block of Fitzpatrick St in Churdan. At 3:55 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with trying to locate a runaway in the 400 block of N. Maple St in Jefferson. At 6 pm a deputy investigated a suspected scam that originated from Rippey. At 6:01 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 900 block of 180th St in Bristol Township. At 7:20 pm a deputy investigated a 911 hang up in the 800 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. It was found that kids were playing with the phone. At 7:32 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a no contact order in the 100 block of W. 2nd St in Rippey. At 9:02 pm a deputy investigated a single car accident in the 2000 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Junction Township. David Muruato, 35, of Marshalltown pulled over too far on the gravel and the shoulder gave out and the car slid into the ditch. There was no damage to the 1992 Nissan Maxima. At 10:39 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Marilyn Wolfe, 66, of Jefferson was eastbound and struck a deer on the roadway. Damage to her 2011 Ford Escape was estimated at $4,000.

Monday, June 26: At 12:08 am a deputy investigated a noise complaint in the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 2:25 pm a deputy arrested Dore James, 43, of Churdan on an arrest warrant for possession of marijuana- first offense and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 3:20 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 26: At 8:21 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 100 block of W. 2nd St in Rippey.

Saturday, June 24: At 8:55 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1800 block of 195th St in Junction Township. At 11:11 am a deputy assisted with a bail fire in the 2300 block of 210th St in Junction Township. At 6:40 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 200 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Friday, June 23: At 7:25 am a two deputies assisted with a two-car head on collision just into Boone County on Highway 30. Drivers were injured but not fatally. At 2:43 pm a deputy investigated a single car accident on 230th Street. Samantha Flynn, 22, of Ogden struck a chair that was in the roadway. There was no damage to her vehicle. At 5:08 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 800 block of Hill St in Churdan. At 7:06 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks being set off in Paton. At 8:44 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of fireworks in the 600 block of State St in Scranton.

Thursday, June 22: At 4:54 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road E-53 (230th St) near Jordan Ave in Jackson Township. Jeri Hedges, 35, of Bagley was eastbound in her 2007 GMC Yukon when a deer ran out in front of the vehicle. The estimated damage to the vehicle is $8,000. At 8:39 am a deputy picked up an abandoned bicycle on Highway 30 near 222 St at Grand Junction. At 1:52 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive off in Churdan.

Wednesday, June 21: At 3:30 am a deputy investigated a noise complaint in the 400 block of S. 9th St in Grand Junction. At 5:45 am a deputy assisted with putting cattle back in a fence at County Road P-29 (N Ave) and 110th St in Dawson Township.

Tuesday, June 20: At 11:45 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 700 block of E. Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 2:26 pm a deputy investigated a small fire in the ditch on Highway 30 near mile marker 103. The fire was put out by a DOT employee.

Monday, June 19: At 8:10 am a deputy investigated a viscious dog in the 300 block of Lincoln St at Scranton. At 11:44 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of 5th St in Grand Junction. At 1:53 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 300 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 9:03 pm a deputy investigated a hay bail on fire in the ditch on County Road P-14 (J Ave) and 330th St.

Sunday, June 18: At 1:26 pm a deputy investigated dogs running at large on Highway 25 (E Ave) near the park in Scranton. At 9:26 pm a deputy investigated a dog running at large complaint in the 300 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Saturday, June 17: At 9:40 am a deputy arrested Clay Paulson, 21, of Dana on an arrest warrant for failure to appear*. At 5:31 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 100 block of 3rd St in Rippey. At 7:20 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 700 block of 11th St. South in Grand Junction.

Friday, June 16: At 7:08 am a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1800 block of 195th St in Hardin Township. At 2:20 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 300 block of Main St in Grand Junction. At 1:14 pm Kaleb Mckinsey, 27, of Carroll was booked into the jail for a probation violation arrest warrant out of Polk County*. At 2:25 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive off at the Paton Pit Stop in Paton. At 8:21 pm a deputy investigated dogs running at large in the 300 block of Lincoln St in Scranton.

Thursday, June 15: At 7:47 am a deputy investigated criminal mischief to the shelter house at Seven Hills Park. At 1:41 pm the sheriff and deputies assisted the Jefferson PD and the Kossuth County sheriff’s office with a search warrant in the 600 block of W. South St in Jefferson. At 8:11 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 500 block of Paton St in Paton. At 8:43 pm a deputy investigated a car deer accident on County Road E-53 (240th St) and H Ave in Jackson Township. Whitney Cue, 29, of Coon Rapids was traveling east and struck a deer with her 2016 Ford Explorer. The estimated damage to the vehicle was $2,500.

Wednesday, June 14: At 4:08 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 700 block of Harding St in Churdan. At 12:23 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 2400 block of 180th St in Paton Township.

Tuesday, June 13: At 6:38 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:31 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 5:44 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 200 block of Main St in Grand Junction. At 8:25 pm a deputy investigated a loud music complaint in the 900 block of Main St in Scranton. At 8:35 pm a deputy assisted the JPD with a search in the 300 block of N. Oak St in Jefferson.

Monday, June 12: At 10:55 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 3:19 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with the arrest of Ryan Brown, 44, of Jefferson for driving while barred. At 5:32 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 1600 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township. At 6:41 pm a deputy investigated a rollover accident in the 1600 block of Quaker Ave in Grant Township. Hunter Kinney, 18, of Rippey was operating a 1999 Dodge Dakota. He lost control of the vehicle and entered the ditch and rolled the truck. The truck was a total loss. Greene County EMS transported Kinney with non-life threatening injuries. At 6:45 pm Melissa Kroupa, 38, of Granger was booked into the jail on arrest warrants for failure to appear on charges of attempted burglary- second degree and burglary- third degree*. At 11:09 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 300 block of S. 17th St in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 11: At 7:15 am a deputy investigated the theft of about 25 hogs from a site in the 1100 block 110th St in Dawson Township.

Saturday, June 10: At 6:25 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 900 block of Irving St in Scranton. At 6:25 pm Michael Hamilton, 40, of Jefferson was booked into the county jail on a Carroll County arrest warrant for contempt of court*. He was then transported to Carroll County. At 7:11 pm a deputy investigated a road blow-up on County Road P-33 (S Ave) near County Road E-53 (230th St) in Grant Township. At 7:17 pm a deputy took a report of a muddy-colored pit bull missing from the 1600 block of 120th St in Dawson Township. At 10:21 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 200 block of Adaza St in Adaza. Joshua Gingery, 32, of Adaza was arrested for domestic abuse assault*.

Friday, June 9: At 3:34 am a deputy investigated a fire that was found to be a controlled burn in the area of County Road P-363 (S Ave) and County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township.

Thursday, June 8: At 11:01 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 4:35 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a dog locked in a hot car at Spring Lake. The vehicle was gone when the deputy arrived. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident in the 2000 block of 295th St in Washington Township. Bobbijo Moritz, 40, of Rippey was westbound on 295th St and swerved to miss a deer and went into the ditch, rolling the vehicle. The vehicle was a 2005 Buick Rainier and was a total loss. The driver was cited for no insurance- accident related. At 11:14 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 100 block of 2nd St in Rippey.

Wednesday, June 7: At 7:12 am a deputy investigated a hay fire near T Ave and 295th St in Washington Township. Fire departments from Rippey, Grand Junction and Jefferson responded. At 7:37 am a deputy investigated a hay grinder truck that was on fire on County Road E-53 and Highway 144 at Grand Junction. The driver of the truck put out the smoldering hay on his own.

Tuesday, June 6: At 11:21 am the Greene County sheriff’s office received a 911 call of an accident involving a semi-tractor and tractor in the 2400 block of County Road E-18 (130th St) in Paton Township. Troy Shaw, 25, of Harcourt was eastbound driving a 1996 Freight Liner semi with an empty grain trailer. Patrick Fields, 47, of Paton was also eastbound, driving a 1965 Farmall tractor. Shaw struck, Fields in the rear, pushing it into the north ditch. The tractor rolled on to Fields. Fields was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The Greene County sheriff’s office, Iowa State Patrol, the fire departments from Jefferson, Grand Junction and Paton, and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the accident. At 12:51 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 200 block of Lawrence St in Dana. At 1:10 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint at 9th St and Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 6:07 pm a deputy investigated an accident on Highway 144 near 215th St north of Grand Junction. The vehicle was not located.

Monday, June 5: At 9:33 am a deputy investigated a runaway in the 700 block of S. 11th St in Grand Junction. The juvenile was located and returned home. At 8:23 pm a deputy investigated a reported theft of a sandal from the basketball court at the Intermediate School in Grand Junction.

Sunday, June 4: At 8:06 am a deputy investigated a car burglary in the 700 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 4:41 pm a deputy investigated a blow up in the roadway on Quaker Ave just north of 255th St in Grant Township. At 7:21 pm a deputy investigated a road blow up on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 305th St in Greenbrier Township. At 7:48 pm a deputy investigated a road blow up on County Road P-14 (J Ave) near 230th St in Jackson Township.

Saturday, June 3: At 11:28 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 300 block of 13th St in Grand Junction.

Friday, June 2: At 2:04 am a deputy investigated a domestic in the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan. Laura Hoyle, 35, of Churdan was arrested for domestic abuse assault- second offense*. At 11:25 am a deputy assisted with cattle on the roadway near County Road P-36  (S Ave) and 195th St in Hardin Township. At 5:16 pm a deputy conducted traffic control while the Jefferson fire department cleaned up an oil spill on the roadway near 300th St on Highway 4 in Franklin Township. At 6:05 pm Dylan Davis, 18, of Grand Junction was booked into the jail for possession of marijuana- first offense, interference with official acts, and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 6:32 pm Joanne Gay, 41, of Carroll was booked into the jail for Carroll County arrest warrants for theft- fifth degree*.

Thursday, June 1: At 10:03 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive off in the 500 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
