Fireworks still illegal in Jefferson without a permit

Jefferson chief of police Mark Clouse reminds residents of Jefferson that although the state legislature “legalized” the sale and use of fireworks in Iowa, Jefferson still has an ordinance in place prohibiting them.

City Ordinance 41.12 prohibits the sale or use of fireworks inside the incorporated city limits of Jefferson. “This ordinance has been, and is still in effect at this time,” Clouse said.

Any person displaying fireworks in the city will be subject to a citation and fined up to $250.

It is not illegal to possess fireworks, but it is illegal to use them within the city limits.

As in the past, residents can seek a fireworks permit from the Jefferson city council to have a fireworks display inside the city limits.
