Sheriff’s report – May 2017

Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:

Wednesday, May 31: At 6:16 am a deputy investigated a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Chicago St and Eagle St in Scranton. Jeffrey Hartl, 50, of Coon Rapids was southbound on Eagle St in his 2001 Chevrolet Blazer when he was struck by Frank Adamson, 48, of Scranton, who was eastbound on Eagle St driving a 2009 Dodge Journey. Hartl’s vehicle rolled onto its roof and was totaled. Damage to Adamson’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000. Hartl was cited for failure to yield right of way. All persons involved were wearing their seat belts and nobody was injured.

At 4:30 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident in the 1500 block of Highway 144 (U Ave) in Junction Township. Ladonna Lebeck, 53, of Grand Junction was getting her mail when another vehicle struck her rear view mirror and did not stop. The damage to her 2002 Buick Lesabre was estimated at $500. At 7:09 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1800 block of 283rd St in Franklin Township. At 7:42 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 500 block of Stanton St in Scranton. At 10:44 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of W. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, May 30: At 9:14 am a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint in the 300 block of N. 7th St in Grand Junction. At 12:16 pm a deputy investigated a dog complaint in the 1000 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 10:20 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 1400 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Jackson Township.

Monday, May 29: At 11:24 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident at Flack River Farms in the 900 block of 222nd St in Jackson Township. Douglas Repp, 53, of Minburn was operating a dirt bike when he lost control and landed on his head. Repp suffered serious injuries and was taken by helicopter from the scene. There was no damage to the motorcycle. The Greene County sheriff’s office and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene. At 8:14 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 200 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. Jamie Glass, 51, of Rippey was arrested for domestic abuse assault- first offense.

Sunday, May 28: At 9:37 am a deputy investigated a burglary report in the 700 block of Main St in Scranton. At 10:54 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad in the area of County Road P-33 west of Grand Junction.

Saturday, May 27: At 8:10 am a deputy investigated a stolen vehicle out of Des Moines. The vehicle was not located. At 8:53 am a deputy investigated a stray dog in the 100 block of Sunset St in Grand Junction. At 7:38 pm a deputy and an Iowa State Patrol officer investigated a careless driving complaint. They located the vehicle, a 2011 Nissan Altima, and subsequently arrested Brian Roe, 47, of Carroll for operating while intoxicated- first offense*. 

Friday, May 26: At 8:29 am a deputy investigated an assault in the 200 block of Fitzpatrick St in Churdan. At 1:19 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 800 block of 8th St in Scranton. Amber Benavides, 24, of Paton was arrested for assault-simple*. Regina Forkner, 35, of Scranton was also arrested for assault simple.* At 5 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 1400 block of 160th St in Dawson Township.

Thursday, May 25: At 12:40 am a deputy investigated a narcotics complaint in the 300 block of 13th St in Grand Junction. At 2:29 pm a deputy investigated a juvenile who was vaping or using a E-cigarette at Spring Lake. At 8:04 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 300 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. At 11:23 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 300 block of Hill St in Churdan. While investigating this complaint the deputy located Mark Burgart, for whom there were Greene County arrest warrants on charges of burglary. Burgart fled and was not located.

Tuesday, May 23: At 12:18 pm a deputy investigated a hit and run accident at the Scranton Community Center in the 900 block of Madison St. An unknown vehicle had jumped the curb and struck the air conditioning unit. Damage was estimated at $3,000. At 1:57 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 600 block of School St in Churdan. At 7:56 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive-off at the Paton Pit Stop. At 8:52 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in thee 600 block of Harding St in Churdan.

Monday, May 22: At 7:57 pm a deputy investigated a two car accident at the intersection of Highways 30 and 144 at Grand Junction. Melyda Weltha, 41, of Grand Junction was westbound on Highway 30 driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. Stephen Mok, 34, of Des Moines was stopped at the stop sign and pulled out in front of Weltha. The vehicles collided in the intersection. Damage to Weltha’s vehicle was estimated at $3,500. Damage to Mok’s 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was estimated at $1,500. At 11:42 pm deputy investigated a single car-deer accident on  265th Street near County Road P-30  in Grant Township. Justin Thompson was eastbound when he struck a deer. Damage to his 2015 Ford F150 was estimated at $1,500.

Sunday, May 21: At 9:06 am a deputy tried to locate two dogs running loose in Scranton. At 12:29 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 12:53 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of suspicious activity in the 1100 block of County Road E-53 (240th St) in Jackson Township. At 2:06 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 100 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey. At 4:38 pm a deputy investigated cattle out on the roadway on S Ave near Squirrel Hollow Park in Grant Township.

Saturday, May 20: At 7:30 am a deputy assisted with a structure fire in Dallas County in the 1300 block of 120th St. At 9:14 am a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1400 block of 270th St in Franklin Township. At 5:48 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1400 block of 270th St in Franklin Township. At 6:31 pm a deputy investigated a dog complaint in the 300 block of N. 17th St in Grand Junction. At 11:25 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 500 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction.

Friday, May 19: At 8;06 am a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint on County Road E-53 (235th St) east of Jefferson. At 4:11 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 300 block of Highway 144 (U Ave) in Paton Township. At 7:20 pm Nathaniel Brown, 50, of Scranton was booked into the jail for a violation of a no contact order (two counts) and harassment- third degree*.

Thursday, May 18: At 3:23 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 900 block of Cedar St in Scranton.

Wednesday, May 17: At 5:54 pm the sheriff set the detour signs back up near Grand Junction that were blown over during the storm.

Tuesday, May 16: At 1:45 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 900 block of Grant Street in Scranton. At 4:26 pm a deputy investigated a crossing arm malfunction on the railroad crossing in Grand Junction. At 8:23 pm a deputy assisted the DCI in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 9 pm a deputy assisted with a tree branch on a powerline in the 200 block of South 7th St in Grand Junction. At 9:05 pm a deputy picked up road closed signs and detour signs that were blown down along the detour on Highway 30. At 11:34 pm a deputy investigated a fire in the 100 block of Main St in Cooper. It was found that the shed was struck by lightning. The structure was burned to the ground. Damage was estimated at $8,000. 

Monday, May 15: At 7 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with a fatal house fire in Guthrie Center. At 8:03 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1600 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township. At 8:09 am a deputy investigated an abandoned vehicle in the ditch in the 200 block of County Road E-63 (320th St) in Willow Township. Drug paraphernalia was found in the car but no driver was located. At 1:43 pm a deputy investigated a dog bite in the 700 block of Q Ave in Hardin Township. At 4:51 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 100 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey. At 9:21 pm a deputy investigated a domestic disturbance in the 400 block of 9th St in Grand Junction. Chad Lehnhoff, 43, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault*.

Sunday, May 14: At 4:12 pm a deputy investigated a violation of a protective order in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township.

Saturday, May 13: At 2 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident at 230th St and V Ave in Junction Township. Gunnar Forster, 20, of Boone lost control of his 2007 Nissan Altima and went into the ditch. The damage to the vehicle was estimated at $3,000. Forster was cited for failure to maintain control and failure to provide insurance. At 8:04 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 18th Street North near 2nd St in Grand Junction. Nick Parris, 34, of Boone lost control of his 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis and entered the ditch. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 1:04 pm a deputy investigated a possible arson attempt in the 400 block of Sand St in Churdan. At 4:41 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction. At 5:03 pm a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of Harding St  in Churdan.

Friday, May 12: At 9:01 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 300 block of North 13th St in Grand Junction. At 11:03 am a deputy provided security in the district court room. At 10:07 pm a deputy investigated a field fire on B Ave near Highway 30 in Kendrick Township. The Glidden and Ralston fire departments responded and put the fire out.

Thursday, May 11: At 4:55 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 300 block of South 12th St in Grand Junction. At 9:55 am a deputy investigated a vicious or ill dog in the 800 block of High St in Scranton. At 4:21 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 2200 block of 305th St in Washington Township. At 4:49 pm a deputy investigated drug paraphernalia that was found in a newly purchased vehicle in the 1800 block of 240th St in Junction Township. At 6:54 pm a deputy investigated a theft of a vehicle in the 1500 block of Q Ave in Grant Township. The vehicle was located in Jefferson. Nicholas Miner, 38, of Ames was located with the car. Miner will be charged with criminal mischief- fifth degree and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle*. At 8:08 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in the 800 block of Main St in Scranton. A juvenile was arrested for domestic abuse assault. At 8:40 pm a deputy investigated a sexual assault in the 1600 block of D Ave in Scranton. At 10:48 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 500 block of Jefferson St in  Scranton. At 11:46 pm a deputy assisted a JPD officer with the arrest of Nicholas Miner, 38, of Ames for a probation violation*.

Wednesday, May 10: At 2:31 am a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the area of 337th St and Y Ave in Washington Township. At 7:26 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a stolen vehicle in Grand Junction. The vehicle was not located. At 1:08 pm a deputy assisted the Grand Junction fire department with a report of a structure fire in the 100 block of Sunset St in Grand Junction. At 1:23 pm a deputy investigated a criminal mischief complaint in the 300 block of Main St in Rippey. At 4:34 pm a deputy investigated a burglary in the 400 block of Railroad St in Grand Junction. At 5:14 pm a deputy investigated a harassment complaint in the 1800 block of Redwood Ave in Grant Township.

Tuesday, May 9: At 2:23 pm a deputy investigated an assault in the 600 block of Main St in Scranton. Daniel Knippel, 24, of Boone was arrested for harassment- third degree, trespass, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon*. At 2:48 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 300 block of Hendricks St in Rippey. At 4:58 pm a deputy investigated a careless driving complaint on Hager St in Grand Junction. At 5:05 pm a deputy investigated a runaway in the 1000 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. The juvenile was located and returned. At 9:37 a deputy investigated a fire in the 1800 block of P Ave in Grant Township. It was found to be a controlled burn.

Monday, May 8: At 3:31 pm a deputy investigated a gas theft at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. At 4:39 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 217th Street and V Ave in Junction Township. Demian Udaka, 25, of Grimes was turning off 217th St and went to grab his drink and drove his 2009 Audie AA6 into the ditch on V Ave. There was no damage to the vehicle and no injuries. At 4:50 pm a deputy investigated a careless driver on 217th St and V Ave. At 5:13 pm a deputy investigated a careless driver on U Ave just south of Rippey.

Sunday, May 7: At 10:45 pm a deputy caught a dog that was aggressive in the 600 block Hills Ave in Churdan.

Saturday, May 6: At 12:13 am a deputy attempted to locate a donkey on the roadway at Highway 30 and County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. At 4:03 am a deputy arrested Clinton Summers, 16, of Guthrie Center for operating while intoxicated*. At 7:31 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on 230th St and County Road P-46 east of Grand Junction. Gary Stickfort, 25, of Windsor Heights was driving a concrete pump truck and turned too soon and dropped the rear axle in the ditch. There was no damage to the truck. At 10:15 am a deputy investigated a burglary at County Road E-57 and 2nd St in Rippey. At 4:30 pm a deputy investigated an attempted burglary in the 1200 block of Highway 4 north of Jefferson.

Friday, May 5: At 5:37 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the 400 block of South 14th St in Grand Junction. At 7:12 am a deputy assisted with putting two horses and a donkey back in a fence at Highway 30 and Highway 141 at Grand Junction. At 7:27 am a deputy assisted the Panora police department with locating a subject in the 2400 block of 337th St in Washington Township. At 10:57 am a deputy investigated a vehicle in the ditch at in the 100 mile of Highway 144 in Paton Township. McClellan Siruta was entering a driveway and turned too short and dropped the back axle of a trailer in the ditch. There was no damage. At 6:35 pm a deputy investigated an accident in the 100 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction. Johnathan Laue, 40, of Grand Junction was working on a tractor and went to start it. The tractor was in gear and it traveled down the sidewalk until it hit a tree with the left rear tire. The tractor then turned and struck the Grand Junction library causing damage to the outside wall and interior wall.

Thursday, May 4: At 9:31 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint on the railroad near Kirkwood Ave in Jackson Township. At 11:27 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 1200 block of Imperial Ave in Bristol Township.

Wednesday, May 3: At 2:02 am a deputy arrested Rick Tomas Weiss, 47, of Fort Dodge for operating while under the influence on County Road P-29 (N Ave) near 110th St in Dawson Township. At 7:27 am a deputy investigated a violation of a protective order in the 1900 block of Locust St in Scranton. At 7:35 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 300 block of Hendrick St in Rippey. At 8:02 am a deputy investigated a sexual assault in the 2200 block of M Ave in Greenbrier Township. At 2:50 pm a deputy investigated a gas drive off at Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. At 10:13 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 700 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction.

Tuesday, May 2: At 2:53 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with the arrest of Ricky Comer, 61, of Grand Junction. At 1:15 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of horses running loose near R Ave and 195th St in Hardin Township. At 3:56 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a vicious dog in the 500 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction. At 4:15 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident on Highway 144 at 215th St north of Grand Junction. Victorio Garcia of Arizona failed to negotiate the curve and went into the ditch. The vehicle was a semi-tractor trailer. There was no damage to the vehicle nor trailer.

Monday, May 1: At 2:34 am a deputy investigated a railroad crossing malfunction on all crossings in Grand Junction. At 2:40 pm a deputy investigated a driving complaint in Rippey. At 7:15 pm a deputy investigated the violation of a protective order in the 1900 block of Locust St in Scranton.

*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
