A prayer service for Dane Kious, 86, of Jefferson was held Wednesday, May 31, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jefferson. Interment was at Jefferson Municipal Cemetery.  Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The family was assisted by Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home of Jefferson.

Dane Robert Kious, son of Chester Leone Kious and Evelyn Irene Peters Kious, was born June 18, 1930, in Carroll, IA. Dane died May 26, 2017, at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson at the age of 86 years.

Dane grew up in Jefferson and lived there his entire life. He graduated from Jefferson High School. In 1947, Dane enlisted in the United States Army Reserves, where he served as an Administrative, Supply and Maintenance Technician. Dane served 23 years and retired from the military in 1970 as a Commissioned Warrant Officer. He then began working for AMF/AAI as the vice president of operations and worked there for 18 years. Dane and Betty then started their own business, IASPORT Inc, which was a manufacturing plant that they operated for six years before he retired in June on 1992.

On April 18, 1952, Dane was united in marriage to Betty Kendall. They were the proud parents of six children: Michael, Rosemary, Timothy, Carol, Jeffrey, and Sandra. Dane stayed very busy going to watch his children’s different activities. He was very active in the early years of the Jefferson Little League as both a coach and umpire. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and this was often a family activity that they could all do together. He was also active in the Big Brother Program with the high school students. He spent many years as a competitive shooter with Iowa Guard rifle team and local unit small bore rifle team.

Dane also loved to golf with his wife Betty and the children and was a long time member of Greene County Golf and Country Club. He was active in Boy Scouts of America as Troop 34 member, area camp program director and as a scout troop leader.

Dane’s greatest interest and source of pride was his wife and his family, and seeing his children progress through school and their early family lives and attain success in adulthood with their own families, children and jobs.

Dane was preceded in death by his parents, his son Timothy, and grandson Ryan Michael Hoffman. He is survived by his wife Betty Kious of Jefferson; his children Michael (Chris) Kious of Bella Vista, AR, Rosemary (Ray) Tucker of Jefferson, Carol Ann (Gary) Gray of Omaha, NE, Jeff (Julie) Kious of Omaha, NE, and Sandy (Kevin) Alsup of Gravette, AR; daughter-in-law Penny Kious of Jefferson; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and many friends.
