A few new things at Relay for Life

Relay for Life, Saturday at the Greene County Community Center

The organizers of the 21st Relay for Life of Greene County this Saturday, dubbed a “game changer,” have changed up the 5K run/walk and the entertainment schedule.

The 5K Scrabble Run will use a different route than other years, this time using part of the Raccoon River Valley Trail and not crossing Highway 4. Check-in begins at 9:30 am with the run at 10:30, following the survivor walk.

The Greene County Singers will kick off the entertainment at 11 am. Their performance will be followed by the premier performance of the Town & Country Jazz Experience.

T&C Jazz Experience pulls together members of the Town & Country Band of Churdan and the Greene County High School jazz band.

“This is an opportunity to connect my students with some of the people who have helped to build the tradition of musical excellence in our community,” high school band director Wes Anderson said.

T&C Jazz Experience will play from the Town & Country Band’s jazz repertoire and the jazz contest music the students played earlier this year.

“Playing the jazz music gives us a chance to add to our repertoire, and it gives us an awesome chance to make music a multi-generational thing, which is one of the things we like to promote and one of the things that makes us unique,” said T&C Band director Victoria Chargo.

The Rhythm Room Dancers will perform at 11:50. Sponsors will be recognized at 12:15 pm, followed by a performance by dancers from Prairie Blue Creative Arts at 12:30.

Another new group to the entertainment line-up, Studio 3:16 Brass, will perform at 1 pm.

Also new to the Relay this year is a 50/50 cash raffle. Tickets are available now from event leadership team members and at the Greene County Community Center. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. One winner will get half the total of ticket sales, and the winner doesn’t need to be present at the Relay.

The community barbecue will be served from 11 am to 1 pm. The barbecue is sponsored by Fareway with meat donated and grilled by the Greene County Cattlemen and Pork Producers. Free will donations will be accepted for Relay for Life.

Bidding on silent auction items will start at 9:30 and end at 1:15. The luminaria ceremony with music by the Greene County Singers will be at 1:50. Silent auction items can be picked up at 2:15.

The Relay for Life will be held at the Greene County Community Center. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
