Early registration for Relay Scrabble 5K ends soon

The Greene County Relay for Life will hold its first ever 5K Scrabble Run/Walk April 22 along a new route that includes part of the Raccoon River Valley Trail and does not cross Highway 4.

Early registration is open until April 14. Registrations will be accepted after that day, and even the day of the Relay, but early registrants will save $5.

Check-in on April 22 will be from 9:30 to 10:15 at the Greene County Community Center. The 5K will start at 10:30. The route begins and ends at the Community Center.

Runners and walkers will receive Scrabble letters along the route. There will be drawings for plenty of fun prizes for those who turn in words using their letters; the more words, the bigger the prizes. One grand prize winner will receive a “Stay and Play” overnight package donated by Wild Rose Jefferson.

And to add to the fun, participants can purchase extra letters as they build their words, increasing their chances for the larger prizes. Consonants can be purchased for $1, and vowels will cost $2.

With the Scrabble Run/Walk bandanas are committee members Emily Neese (front) and (back, from left) Kim Tjepkes, Linda Jones, Kate Neese, Michelle Fields and Libby Towers.

The drawings will be held at about 11:45 am, and participants must be present to win. “With so many other activities planned to take place during the Relay, we’re sure many runners will want to stay,” a committee spokesperson said.

All participants will received a Relay Ribbon bandana donated by ShineOn Designs, and a “free pass” to the Relay barbecue lunch.

“This will be fun for all ages, so grab your friends, kids, parents and neighbors and enjoy the excitement,” the spokesperson said.
