Youngsters learn about robotics at WOLF camp

Future scientists attended a camp offered by Greene County Extension in February. Youngsters age 10-14 took advantage of WOLF camp, a robotics program focused on building and programming robots and Spheros.

Instructors for the three sessions were Jason (pictured, left) and Bob Smith (pictured, right) from Tech Zone in Jefferson and Kayla Hyett, 4-H youth coordinator.

Youngsters started by programming Spheros, an app-enabled device resembling BB8 from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” They moved to building and programming robots using EV3 Lego Mindstorm kits. Due to the popularity of the program, another camp will be offered this summer for interested youth.

The program was made possible through funding from the Alliant Energy Foundation. Persons who want more information on this and other youth and 4-H programs can contact Greene County Extension at www.extesnion.iastate.edu/greene, by email at khyett@iastate.edu, call 515-386-2138, or visit the office at 104 W.
