High school musicians in busy stretch

Greene County is hosting the annual Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Fine Arts Festival Thursday, March 2.

A display of visual art created by students from all the HOIAC schools will be at the Greene County Community Center during the day. Musicians will rehearse during the day and present a concert at 7 pm in the middle school gymnasium. The public is cordially invited.

The vocal music department is presenting “Shrek the Musical” this weekend, with performances Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm in the high school auditorium.

High school choir director Dave Heupel reports that the senior sextet that sang the National Anthem for home basketball games will sing the anthem for the opening session of the boys state basketball tournament next Monday, March 6. Nadia Fisher, Kenna Marquardt, Maddie Schroeder, Hannah Promes, Emily Heupel and Michael Fisher comprise the sextet.

The high school will host the Iowa High School Music Association solo/small ensemble festival Saturday, March 25.

Finally, the high school jazz choir, the Jazzatonics, has qualified for the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships for the sixth straight year in Class 3A. Only eight choirs are accepted. The Jazzatonics will perform Tuesday, March 28, at 3 pm at West Des Moines Valley High School.
