Rockets lose two against SE Valley

The Paton-Churdan Rockets lost both basketball games with the Southeast Valley Jaguars in Gowrie Feb. 7. The girls lost 54-34 and the boys lost 61-58.

The girls trailed 12-6 after one quarter and 41-19 after two. Neither team scored in the third quarter.

The Rockets were again without lead scorer Jenna Beyers. Grace Geisler scored 10 points, Megan Carey scored nine, Kyla Beyers added three, Autumn Gannon scored two and Briana Jewett scored one point.

As a team the girls shot at 31 percent from the floor and 58 percent from the free throw line.

The loss put the Rocket girls at 2-16 for the season. They start post season play in Class 1A Region 8 Thursday against Coon Rapids-Bayard in Coon Rapids. The Crusaders finished the regular season with an 8-12 record.

The boys lost in the last minute of play after scrapping to get back in the game from a 22-6 deficit after the first quarter. The Rockets scored 19 points to the Jaguars’ 11 in the second quarter for a 33-25 score at halftime.

The Rocket defense held the Jaguars to 10 points in the third quarter and score was 43-40 in favor of the Jaguars after three quarters. The Rockets were finally able to tie the game at 56 with three minutes to play. With one minute to play the score was knotted at 58, but the Jaguars made three free throws in the last minute to claim a 61-58 victory.

Jake Berns scored 23 points and Joe Towers scored 14. Both boys made one 3-point basket. Thy Miller scored nine points, Chase Juergensen scored five, Charlie Minnehan scored four and Trevor Bundt added three points.

The loss dropped the Rockets to 9-10 on the season. Southeast Valley is 15-5 overall.
