Red Cross accepting nominations for Heroes of the Heartland breakfast

DES MOINES — Do you know someone who has saved a life, made your community a safer place or gone above and beyond to help someone in need?

Each year, the Central Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross honors individuals who have made significant and positive differences in their communities and exemplify the Red Cross mission. Nominations are now open for the Heroes of the Heartland award.

Heroes of the Heartland honors ordinary people whose extraordinary actions demonstrate the potential that is in all of us. Heroes are selected based on the degree to which their acts of heroism and kindness uphold the values and vision of the Red Cross.

In recent years, heroes have been recognized for saving their neighbors, performing CPR or for their outstanding work in the community. Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. If you know someone that you think is a hero, please do not hesitate to nominate him or her. In the past we have honored individuals, groups, adults, children and even pets.

This unique program is also the primary fundraising event to support the mission of the Red Cross in Central Iowa.

The nomination form should be completed by Jan. 20. Heroism need not involve the direct saving of a life. If nominating for a heroic event, the event must have occurred between Feb. 1, 2016, and Jan. 19, 2017.  In order to be eligible for the award nomination, the hero must live, work, or go to school in the counties served by the Central Iowa chapter, which includes Greene.

Nomination forms should be submitted by Monday, Jan. 20, via email to Catherine.utterson@redcross.org or by mail to American Red Cross, Attn: Cathy Utterson, 2116 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312.

Your nomination should include:

  • All of the requested contact information
  • Description explaining why your hero deserves to be recognized
  • Supporting documents such as news articles and photographs

The annual Heroes of the Heartland breakfast will be held on Thursday, March 2, at the Iowa Events Center.

The Red Cross would like to thank title sponsor, Nationwide, video and day-of production partner, Screenscapes Studios, and media partners KCCI and Des Moines Radio Group for their support of Central Iowa Heroes of the Heartland.
