Rams drop two to Gilbert Tigers in HOIAC hoops

The Greene County Rams lost both varsity hoops games to the Gilbert Tigers in the middle school gym in Jefferson Friday evening.

The Gilbert girls entered the game with a similar win-loss record to the Rams and for the first quarter they played even-up ball. The score at the end of one quarter was 10-8 with the visitors in the lead. In the second frame the Tigers outscored the Rams 20 to eight to hold a 30-16 lead at halftime.  The Rams came back in the third quarter to match the Tigers in scoring with 12 points each. The Tigers had a big fourth quarter, scoring 20 points to the Rams’ 14, and the final score was 62-42.

Unofficially the Rams made 16 of 41 shots from the floor for 39 percent, and they made 6 of 13 free throws for 47 percent.

They committed 22 turnovers. Senior Kenna Marquardt scored 15 points including a 3-pointer and four free throws. Senior Taylor Wessling scored 10 points including two 3-point shots. Junior Laurin Lyons scored nine points, senior Hannah Promes scored six, and junior Samantha Hardaway scored two.

The Rams have now lost four in a row. They’re 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

The boys lost in overtime, 68-62, in a game many fans would call a three-team game. The Rams wore their home white uniforms, the visiting Tigers wore black, and the third team wore black and white striped shirts.

The Rams and the Tigers combined shot 79 free throws in a game that lasted 1-3/4 hours. The Tigers were at the line 49 times and made 34 shots for 70 percent shooting. Ram starters Thomas Jacobsen, Wade Adcock and Trey Hinote all fouled out, as did Calvin Skalla. Starters Trey Tucker and Lance Hughes were tagged for four fouls each.

Only one Boone player fouled out, and that was late in the overtime.

In the nine games prior to Friday’s game, the Rams averaged 17 fouls a game. Adcock leads in fouls, averaging 3.34 per game. Tucker and Hinote average 2.6 per game and Jacobsen and Hughes average less than that.

In the four minute overtime, 12 of Gilbert’s 15 points were from the charity stripe.

The first quarter ended with Gilbert up 15-9. Tigers were up 20-14 before the Rams tied it at 25 just as the first half ended. The Rams were ahead 39-34 after three quarters. With 2:06 to play in the game the Rams were ahead 53-49, but the Tigers scored the next four points. Tucker missed a 2-point shot on the buzzer and the game went into OT. The Tigers scored the first five points in OT and led by as many as seven points. The OT, particularly, seemed to be played to a soundtrack of chirps and tweets from the officials’ whistles.

Tucker scored 33 points, well ahead of his 21.8 per game average. Adcock scored 16 points, Hinote scored 10, and Jacobsen scored three. Both teams committed 17 turnovers.

The Tigers are 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference while the Rams are 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. HOIAC action continues in Jefferson Jan. 10 as the Rams host the Prairie City-Monroe Mustangs. Girls varsity action begins at 6 pm with the boys varsity at 7:30. It’s a Mega Night, with freshmen and junior varsity games as well.
