Girls lose, boys win hoops games in Nevada

The Greene County girls are 2-5 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and the boys 5-1 in the conference after a Mega Night in Nevada Dec. 16.

The girls lost 50-23 to the Cubs, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A. The Rams scored just five points in the first half and trailed 31-5 at half-time. They were able to pick up the scoring pace in the second half but it wasn’t enough. Ram Fans were heartened by two 3-point basket by senior Hannah Promes.

Kenna Marquart had eight points, including the only first quarter basket. Promes totaled seven points, Laurin Lyons had three points,  Onica Delp and Ashley Millard had two points each and Samantha Hardaway had one. The Rams made 10 of 41 shots from the floor for 24.4 percent shooting. They made five of 15 free throws for 33 percent.

Marquart led in rebounding with seven, all of them defensive. Lyons had five rebounds and led in assists with four. Of the Rams 22 total rebounds there were no offensive rebounds.

QuickStats for Nevada show 34 rebounds, 22 of them defensive.

The Rams fared better in ball handing, tallying just seven turnovers for the game.

The boys battled through a game that saw both teams scoring below their season average in a 51-46 win. The Rams entered the game scoring an average of 69.7 points per game. The Cubs were slightly off their average of 49.8 points.

Ram sophomore Trey Hinote owned the first quarter, scoring 11 of the Rams’ 13 points, with three 3-points and a deuce. The Cubs managed just one point that quarter. The Cubs put up 17 points in the second quarter and shortened the Rams’ lead to nine points at 27-18.

The game was as close as one point midway in the third quarter with the Rams up 29-28, but the Cubs couldn’t get the lead. The quarter ended 36-32. The Rams were up by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter but the Cubs took advantage of Ram turnovers and cold free throw shooting late in the quarter to get within five points. Final score was 51-46.

Hinote led in scoring with 19 points, 15 of them as 3-point shots. Wade Adcock scored 13 points and Trey Tucker scored nine, all from 3-point range. Lance Hughes had eight points and Ben Wilkins had two.

Tucker led in rebounds with seven and in assists with six. Hinote and Hughes had five rebounds each and Hinote had four assists.

The win puts the Rams at 5-1 in the Heart of Iowa and 6-2 overall.

The Rams will finish the 2016 portion of the season Thursday in Jefferson against non-conference Boone.
